Table Lamps - Crystal Lighting Recommendations & Buying Advice

A table lamp whose base or body is built from cut crystal, either as a solid column or as drops hung on a metal frame. The crystal catches the light from the bulb above and throws it back as sparkle, which is why these lamps read as jewellery for a room rather than as a light source. We hold 28.

A plain one. The base is doing all the work, so an empire or drum shade in an unpatterned linen or silk, about twice the width of the base, lets the crystal be the feature. Cream and champagne throw warmer light than white. A patterned or pleated shade on a crystal base gives you two things competing.

Usually the small E14 cap, which covers 12 of our 28 crystal table lamps. Choose 2700K, since warm light is what makes cut crystal flash amber rather than grey. If the base is open and the bulb is visible through the drops, a clear candle LED looks right; behind a solid shade an opal bulb is softer.

Lead oxide, and what it does to the light. Full lead crystal contains at least 24% lead oxide, which raises the refractive index so cut facets split light into colour, and it takes a sharper cut. Glass has none, so a moulded glass base looks similar switched off and simply glows rather than sparkles when it is lit.

Mostly cool metals. Polished chrome accounts for 13 of our 28, with antique brass at 4 and gold and French gold covering most of the rest. Chrome and nickel let the crystal read as clear and modern. The gold finishes warm the whole piece and sit better in a traditional room with brass elsewhere.

Unplug it and let it cool first. Then wipe the crystal with a soft lint-free cloth barely damp with warm water and a drop of washing-up liquid, drying each section as you go, and take the shade off rather than working around it. Never spray cleaner near the lampholder or flex, and once or twice a year is plenty.

Somewhere it will get knocked. A cut crystal base is heavy and it chips, so a narrow hall table on a busy route or a child's room is asking for trouble. It is also the wrong lamp for reading: the base is the point and the output is modest, so put 400 lumens of task light somewhere else.
