What makes an outdoor wall light traditional?

The shape and the materials. Traditional exterior lights take their form from the gas lanterns of the 18th and 19th centuries: a tapered or box body, a peaked or domed top, visible glazing bars and a scroll or bracket fixing. They are made in brass, copper or cast aluminium with a painted finish, rather than the extruded shapes and flat glass of modern fittings.
What is a Georgian style outdoor lantern?

A lantern in the manner of the Georgian period, roughly 1714 to 1830. Straight-sided or gently tapered, with a stepped or peaked roof and clear glazing divided by slim bars, hung from a scroll bracket or set on one. The proportions are formal and symmetrical, which is why they suit sash-windowed houses better than a modern box lantern.
Which finish suits a period property?

Black or very dark bronze on a painted or rendered house, and solid brass or antique copper on brick and stone, where the warmer metal picks up the mortar. Polished finishes look wrong on a period elevation. Solid brass is also the most durable choice outdoors: it weathers over 2 to 3 years to a soft patina rather than corroding.
What IP rating do traditional outdoor wall lights need?

The same as any exterior fitting: IP44 as a minimum under a porch, IP65 on an exposed wall. Traditional styling makes no difference to the weather. Older lanterns with open bottoms are the ones to watch, since some are designed to be fitted under cover only, which the product page will state.
Can traditional outdoor lights take LED bulbs?

Yes, and a filament-style LED in a clear lantern gives the look of a flame without the running cost. Most take E27 or E14, which the product page confirms. Choose 2700K or warmer, since cool white in a period lantern is the quickest way to make an expensive fitting look cheap.
What is the difference between a wall lantern and a flush outdoor light?

Projection and purpose. A lantern stands proud of the wall on a bracket, often 25 to 40cm, and is meant to be looked at as well as looked by. A flush outdoor light sits tight to the wall and projects perhaps 10cm, which makes it the better choice in a passageway, a narrow side return, or anywhere a car door might catch it.
When is a traditional lantern the wrong choice?

On a modern extension, and in a narrow passage. A Georgian lantern on a flat-roofed glazed extension reads as a mismatch rather than a contrast, and any lantern projecting 30cm is a nuisance where people squeeze past on under 1m of path. In both cases choose a plain flush or up-and-down fitting, and keep the lanterns for the original elevation.
