Glass Table Lamps

Glass bases and glass shades

Glass keeps a lamp light in appearance and picks up colour and light from around the room. This page holds lamps with a glass base, a glass shade or both. All our other lamps are in table lamps.

Clear, tinted and textured

The Elstead Lena and Quintiesse Samara come in tinted glass such as blue, plum and smoke, and the Elstead Kara has a coloured glass base with a handmade shade. The Metal Lux Astro uses bright spiral glass. For an opal glow, the Endon Bridport is a rechargeable lamp in warm brass with matt opal glass.

Bulbs to match

Most here take E27, with some taking G9 or GX53. If the bulb will be on show through clear glass, choose a good looking one. Tiffany designs have their own page, under Tiffany table lamps.

Glass Table Lamps Recommendations & Buying Advice

Do glass table lamps come with a shade?

It depends on the lamp, so check the title and product page. Some have a fabric shade over a glass base, such as the Quintiesse Milne, and others use a glass shade, such as the Schuller Norma. A few, like the Elstead Lena, come with or without an off-white shade, listed separately. Most are sold without a bulb, so check the cap as well.

Is a glass lamp base safe in a family home?

Glass is more easily broken than metal or wood, so think about where it will sit. A glass lamp is best on a stable table away from busy walkways, and out of reach of small children and pets. Keep the flex tidy so it cannot be pulled. If the lamp will be moved often, a cordless metal or ceramic design is usually safer.

What is the difference between clear and tinted glass lamps?

Clear glass looks light and shows the inside of the base, which suits a simple, modern room. Tinted glass, such as blue, plum or smoke, adds colour even when the lamp is off and appears deeper in the evening. Tint may reduce a little light through the glass itself. If the shade is fabric, it will affect the light far more than the base.

What bulb should I use in a glass table lamp?

Most here take E27, with others taking G9, GX53 or E14. Check the maximum wattage on the product page. If the lamp has a clear shade or shows the bulb, choose a shapely filament style or a frosted bulb. A warm white 2700K LED usually looks best, and it runs cooler than a halogen of similar output, which is helpful in a small glass shade.

How do I clean a glass table lamp?

Switch it off and unplug it, let the bulb cool, and use a soft cloth with a little mild glass cleaner on the cloth rather than on the lamp. Keep moisture away from the lampholder, switch and flex. Dust textured or spiral glass with a soft brush first. Dry it fully before switching it back on, and take care with any metal parts.

Are glass table lamps good for a dark room?

Yes, especially with a clear or opal glass shade, as these spread more light into the room than an opaque shade. A glass base also feels less heavy on a small table. In a very dark room, choose a bright bulb within the listed maximum and put the lamp near a pale wall or a mirror. It can then bounce light further.

When is a glass table lamp the wrong choice?

Where it will be knocked, or where you need a focused reading light. A glass lamp is also less suited to a very busy surface, where its outline gets lost among other objects. For close reading, try an adjustable desk lamp, and for a child's room, go for a sturdier material. A rechargeable metal lamp is better for carrying around.
