Indoor Ceiling Lights

Choosing ceiling lights is one of the best parts of any interior design project. Or maybe you just need to liven up a room with something new?

All too often, people leave 'tired' ceiling lights where they are for far too long – convinced that changing for a new one will be too much effort or too expensive.

In fact, we cover all tastes. We have hundreds more sensational mid-priced ceiling lights, and even a fair few (300-plus) priced at £2,000 and above. Can we let you in on a secret? When people start to fully appreciate the transformative nature of great ceiling lighting, they become hooked!

Light Fittings

When adding ceiling light fittings, there are a number of things to consider. One is the weight of your intended light – is your ceiling strong enough to support it?

Another is the type of light you are looking for. Do you want a light that will sit flush with the ceiling? Or do you want a semi-flush fitting, which hangs down just a little (typically 6-12 inches).

The largest range is undoubtedly what's known as pendant lights or suspended lighting: these can hang down anything from a few inches to a dozen feet or more. Do make sure you have the requisite amount of drop space before ordering – or feel free to contact our expert team for help.

Other types of ceiling light include chandeliers and kitchen island lights. There are even kitchen island chandeliers!

If you browse through our collection, you'll see lights of all shapes, sizes and styles, including numerous modern ceiling lights. A helpful tip – click on a picture when scrolling through and you'll often see additional images of that light installed in a property.

Ceiling Lights - Indoor Lighting Recommendations & Buying Advice

What are the three main types of ceiling light?

Flush, semi-flush and suspended. A flush fitting sits tight against the ceiling and suits anything under about 2.4m. A semi-flush drops a short way and gives you decoration without losing headroom. Suspended covers pendants and chandeliers, which need height to look right.

What is the difference between a flush and a semi-flush ceiling light?

Height, and about 20cm of it. A flush fitting sits directly against the ceiling with no gap. A semi-flush hangs on a short stem, usually 10 to 25cm, which lets light wash upwards as well as down and gives the fitting some presence. If your ceiling is under 2.4m, or a door swings beneath it, choose flush.

What size ceiling light do I need for my room?

A good rule of thumb: add the room's length and width in feet, and that number in inches is a sensible diameter. A 12ft by 14ft room suits roughly a 26in, or 66cm, fitting. Go larger over a dining table, where the fitting should be around two thirds the table's width, and smaller in a hallway.

How low should a ceiling light hang?

Leave at least 2.1m of clear headroom in a walkway. Over a dining table you can ignore that and hang the fitting 70 to 90cm above the tabletop, because nobody walks under it. In a stairwell, hang so the lowest point is level with the first floor landing and the fitting is seen from both levels.

Are bulbs included with ceiling lights?

Usually not. Most decorative ceiling lights are supplied without bulbs so you can choose the brightness and colour temperature yourself, and the product page lists the cap and the maximum wattage for each one. Integrated LED fittings are the exception, since the light source is built in and not replaceable. We stock bulbs for every cap.

Can I fit a ceiling light in a bathroom?

Only one rated for it. A bathroom light needs an IP rating suited to its zone, which in practice means IP44 as a minimum for most ceilings and IP65 directly over a bath or shower. In England and Wales, electrical work in a bathroom is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, so use a qualified electrician.

When is a ceiling light the wrong choice?

When it is the only light in the room. One fitting in the middle of a ceiling flattens everything beneath it and throws shadows on faces, which is the commonest lighting mistake in a British home. In a living room or bedroom, use the ceiling light for general light and add lamps or wall lights for the light you actually sit in.
