Flush - Bathroom Recommendations & Buying Advice

What IP rating does a bathroom ceiling light need?

IP44 as a minimum over most of a bathroom, and higher directly above a bath or shower. Of our 70 flush bathroom fittings, 52 are IP44, 3 are IP54 and 3 are IP65. The rating you need depends on the zone the fitting sits in, so measure from the bath or shower before choosing rather than after.
What are bathroom zones?

A way of describing how wet each part of the room gets. Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower tray, zone 1 is directly above it to 2.25m, and zone 2 extends 0.6m beyond that and around a basin. Each zone sets a minimum IP rating, and anything outside them is treated as a dry room.
Why choose a flush fitting in a bathroom?

Headroom and steam. A flush light sits tight to the ceiling, so it clears a shower door and does not hang where a raised arm reaches, and a sealed flush body gives steam far less to condense inside than an open pendant does. In a room under about 2.4m it is the only sensible ceiling fitting.
What is the difference between IP44 and IP54?

The first digit, which covers solids. Both resist splashing water from any direction, so their water protection is identical. IP54 adds dust protection, meaning limited ingress that does not interfere with operation, where IP44 only guards against objects above 1mm. In a bathroom the water digit is what matters, so IP44 and IP54 are effectively equivalent.
What bulb goes in a bathroom flush light?

An E27 on 24 of our 70, with GU10, E14 and G9 covering most of the rest, and 5 fittings having an integrated LED. Choose 3000K rather than 2700K: a bathroom benefits from a slightly crisper light at the mirror, and it keeps white tiles and sanitaryware looking white rather than cream.
Does a bathroom light have to be fitted by an electrician?

In England and Wales, electrical work in a bathroom is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, so yes, use a qualified electrician who can certify it. The rules exist because a bathroom combines water, bare skin and earthed metalwork. This is the one room where a like-for-like swap is still not a job to take on yourself.
When is a flush bathroom light the wrong choice?

In a large or high bathroom that needs more than one light source. A single flush fitting in the middle of the ceiling puts you in your own shadow at the mirror, which is the commonest complaint we hear about bathroom lighting. Add a mirror light or wall lights at the basin and let the flush fitting do general light.
