What Are the Best Floor Lamps for a UK Living Room? Our Picks
By James Kelly, KES Lighting & Home. Last updated 2nd November 2026.

For most UK living rooms we would buy the Interiors 1900 Stanford (£307.95) to read by, the Endon Jaspa 3 Light (£88.55) to reach over a sofa on its own dimmer, and the Endon Highclere 3 Light (£102.95) for a broad, soft glow. Under £50, the Novena Malle tripod is £30.06, shade and bulb included.

Prices were checked on 2nd November 2026. Every pick below has a job and a look, because a lamp that lights your book and a lamp that lights your ceiling are different purchases. We started from what has sold best across our floor lamps over the last twelve months, read the reviews, and then applied our own opinion, which we will flag when we use it. For the theory, how to choose a floor lamp covers types, height, placement and brightness. This guide names names.

The short version

  • To read by, buy a swing arm. The Stanford's shade moves 420 to 700mm while the base stays put.
  • To reach over a sofa and dim it, buy the Jaspa 3 Light. At £88.55 it is the least expensive floor lamp we sell with a dimmer built in.
  • For a classic shaded lamp at the end of a sofa, buy the Feiss State Room. For less money and a wider glow, the Highclere.
  • For an uplighter, the Dark Star throws its light at the ceiling and looks good doing it if Tiffany glass suits your room.
  • Under £50, the Malle tripod at £30.06 comes complete, but its feet need 700mm of floor.
  • Check the fit first: compare the lamp's widest figure with the gap beside your sofa, using the worked room below.

What are the best floor lamps for a living room, job by job?

Here are the eleven we would start with, from £30.06 to £479.75. All prices are inc VAT and were checked on 2nd November 2026. The Stanford, Jaspa, Otto, State Room, Highclere, Ascoli and Ascent are all among our best-selling floor lamps. The other four earn their place on the job alone.

What is the best reading floor lamp?

The Interiors 1900 Stanford swing arm (£307.95, checked 2nd November 2026), because the shade moves and the base does not. It looks the part in a period room: an antique brass stem and circular base under a pleated beige shade, which softens the glow instead of scattering it. At 9.658kg it is no flimsy thing either. Denise P. wrote: 'A beautiful, quality lamp with some weight to it. The moving arm allows you to place the head of the lamp exactly where you want it.'

That arm is the size check. It reaches from 420mm to 700mm, so the base can sit beside the chair while the light lands on the page. The lamp stands 1,600mm high, takes one E27 bulb up to 60W, has a foot switch on the flex and is not dimmable, so choose the bulb with care. If you read for more than a few minutes at a stretch, we would take a swing arm over a fixed shade every time. A fixed lamp lights wherever its base happens to fit.

For less than half the price, the Dark Star Tiffany task lamp (£128.95, checked 2nd November 2026) does the same job with more character: a black frame with iridised glass inserts, holding a small Tiffany glass shade out over a chair arm. It is 1,540mm high and 550mm deep, with a foot switch, and it takes one E14 candle bulb, so expect a smaller pool of light than the Stanford's. That suits close work. Lynn S. calls it 'ideal size while I'm knitting or on my tablet', and Patricia T. wrote: 'We loved this floor lamp so much we ordered a second one!'

Should a reading lamp be 4000K? We would still fit 2700K in a living room, because 4000K beside a sofa at night reads like an office next to everything else in the room. Our guide to warm white and cool white makes the full case.

What is the best floor lamp to reach over a sofa?

The Endon Jaspa 3 Light (£88.55, checked 2nd November 2026), which is the least expensive floor lamp we sell with a dimmer built in. Three satin nickel arms curve up and out from one base, each ending in a white glass globe, so the light comes from three points instead of one hot spot. You can run it up for reading and down for a film. Linda I. found it had 'plenty of bright light for reading, knitting etc', and that you can 'change the direction of each of the stems so can serve multiple people'. Peter H. bought his to replace an old halogen lamp.

Size check: 1,800mm high, 280mm wide and 650mm deep, and the depth is what you are paying for, because it carries the light over the seat without a side table. The LEDs are built in at 3000K, a shade crisper than the 2700K we would normally choose, and you cannot change that. They are rated for 30,000 hours, which at four hours a night works out at about twenty years, and the lamp has a five year guarantee.

If the room needs one clean line more than it needs a dimmer, buy the Endon Otto in matt antique brass (£158.25, checked 2nd November 2026). A brass arc rises from a round black marble base and drops a single opal glass globe over the seat. It is 1,692mm high, 300mm wide and 718mm deep, and takes one E27 bulb up to 40W on a push switch. It is not dimmable. The satin brass version with white and grey marble (£169.75, checked 2nd November 2026) is listed at 800mm deep, so check the extra reach against your room. Our opinion: the Otto looks better and the Jaspa lights better. Buy the one that answers the complaint you actually have.

What is the best traditional floor lamp for a living room?

The Feiss State Room in Bali Brass (£177.54, checked 2nd November 2026). It has a slim brass column on a weighted base and a wide ivory bell shade, and it does what you want at the empty end of a sofa: a warm, shaded light at seated height, with no bulb in your eyes. It stands 1,575mm high and 432mm across the shade, and takes two E27 bulbs up to 60W. The listing describes it as compatible with dimmable smart lamps, which is a different thing from a dimmable fitting, as our note on floor lamp switches explains. More in this vein is under traditional floor lamps.

For less money and a wider spread, the Endon Highclere 3 Light in brushed chrome (£102.95, checked 2nd November 2026) does the same job. Three E14 lamps sit under a 470mm natural linen drum, which gives a broad pool instead of one bright spot. It is 1,600mm high with a foot switch, and it is not dimmable. Gillian C. wrote: 'Just right for our living room.' She later bought the matching Highclere table lamp (£76.55, checked 2nd November 2026) and has a useful warning about that one: candle bulbs 'came up too far above the lampshade', so she changed to mini globes. A golf ball E14 bulb is 73mm tall against 100mm for our candle E14 bulb, so we would start with golf balls here too. Three at £5.95 each is £17.85, which takes the whole lamp to £120.80.

What is the best uplighter floor lamp?

The Interiors 1900 Dark Star uplighter (£217.95, checked 2nd November 2026), provided Tiffany glass suits your room. Its broad bowl of cream and gold glass faces the ceiling, with rays of purple and jade meeting at the centre, on a fluted black stem and a star patterned base. It gives you two effects for one purchase: light bounced off the ceiling into the dim edges of the room, and a shade that glows in its own right. Alwyne H. wrote: 'A beautiful lamp, very competitively priced.'

Size check: 1,755mm high and 420mm across, with a foot switch and one E27 bulb up to 60W. It is not dimmable. Under a 2.4m ceiling that leaves 645mm above the glass for the light to spread. In our view an uplighter needs a pale ceiling: a dark one swallows the light you have paid to bounce. Our main guide explains what an uplighter does and when to choose one, and there is more glass in Tiffany floor lamps.

What is the best modern floor lamp for a small living room or home office?

The Astro Ascoli in bronze (£259.00, checked 2nd November 2026), the plainest lamp here. A slim stem turns through a right angle to a single adjustable head, so you notice the light before the lamp. It is listed at 285mm by 250mm and weighs 4kg, and it also comes in matt black and matt white. Andreas L., who bought the black one, reports: 'Assembly super easy.'

The limit is the bulb. It takes one GU10 bulb, 6W at most and no longer than 57mm, so it lights a book or a keyboard and will not fill a room. Our 35mm 3W 2700K GU10 fits at £8.09 and gives 230 lumens. That is right for a desk corner or an armchair. The head also tilts up towards the ceiling for a softer wash, if you want a plainer route to uplighting than Tiffany glass, but it will be a gentle one. The wider range is in modern floor lamps.

What is the best statement floor lamp?

For sculpture, the Elstead Ascent in black (£272.85, checked 2nd November 2026). A tapered steel column runs from a wide base to a narrow neck under a grey drum shade, and the eye goes up before it registers a lamp at all. At 1,810mm it is the tallest pick here and still leaves 590mm under a 2.4m ceiling, so it does not need a grand room, though it is happiest in one. It weighs 11.7kg and takes one E27 bulb.

For sparkle, the Diyas Wisteria in French gold (£479.75, checked 2nd November 2026). Curved arms trail strands of clear K9 crystal around four E14 lamps, so the light falls through glass with no shade in the way. It is 1,650mm high and 360mm across, weighs 15.38kg and has a foot switch. It is the wrong lamp to read by. Buy it for what it does to a corner at night, and give it the corner to itself.

What is the best floor lamp under £50?

The Novena Malle tripod with a grey linen shade (£30.06, checked 2nd November 2026), which is the least expensive complete floor lamp we sell. Solid wood legs splay out under a 430mm drum, and the price includes the shade and an E27 bulb, with an in-line switch on the flex. It stands 1,550mm high. Solid wood at this price is the reason to buy it.

The catch is floor space. Those legs need 700mm across, more floor than any other pick in this guide, so a tripod can be a poor bargain in a small room. Measure first. If you are lighting a rented room or trying to avoid an electrician, our guide to lighting a room without rewiring picks up from here.

Which floor lamps have the heaviest bases?

Among these picks, the Wisteria at 15.38kg and the Otto at 12.21kg are the heaviest, and the Otto is among the heaviest floor lamps we sell under £200. These listed weights cover the whole lamp, base and all, so treat them as a guide to how planted it will feel.

Lamp Listed weight
Diyas Wisteria 15.38kg
Endon Otto 12.21kg
Elstead Ascent 11.7kg
Interiors 1900 Stanford 9.658kg
Feiss State Room 9.45kg
Endon Jaspa 3 Light 6.83kg
Endon Highclere 6.18kg
Dark Star Uplighter 5.9kg
Dark Star Task 4.86kg
Astro Ascoli 4kg

With toddlers, cats or a large dog, weight helps and guarantees nothing. We would not call any floor lamp child-safe or pet-proof. Stand it behind the furniture, away from the route everyone runs, keep the flex out of reach, and in our view choose a fabric shade over glass.

Will the lamp fit beside your sofa?

Take a real room: a 3.6m wall with a 2.1m sofa centred on it, under a 2.4m ceiling. The wall leaves 1.5m, so you have 750mm each side. Our rule of thumb: compare the lamp's widest figure beside the sofa with that gap, and if the answer is close to zero, mark it out with tape before you order.

Lamp Width beside the sofa Left of the 750mm gap
Novena Malle, feet 700mm 50mm
Endon Highclere, shade 470mm 280mm
Elstead Ascent, shade 460mm 290mm
Feiss State Room, shade 432mm 318mm
Interiors 1900 Stanford, arm folded in 420mm 330mm
Dark Star Uplighter, shade 420mm 330mm
Diyas Wisteria 360mm 390mm
Endon Otto 300mm 450mm
Astro Ascoli 285mm 465mm
Endon Jaspa 3 Light 280mm 470mm
Dark Star Task 260mm 490mm

So the Malle fits with 50mm to spare, which is tight, and everything else has room. The Stanford's arm can open to 700mm, which also leaves 50mm if it swings out to the side, though you would normally swing it towards the seat. The Otto, Jaspa and Dark Star Task use their depth (718mm, 650mm and 550mm) to reach out, so stand them with that reach going over the sofa or chair, and leave room for anyone sitting down. For the height side of the question, see how tall a floor lamp should be and where to put it.

What bulb should go in a living room floor lamp?

A warm white LED, 2700K where you have the choice, in the cap the lamp asks for. The Stanford, State Room, Otto, Ascent and Dark Star Uplighter take E27, and all suit our standard warm white E27 LED (£9.60, checked 2nd November 2026). The State Room needs two. The Dark Star Task and Wisteria take E14 candle bulbs, the Highclere takes E14 too, with the golf ball case made above, and the Ascoli takes a GU10. The Jaspa has its LEDs built in, and the Malle comes with its bulb. For how much light you need, our section on floor lamp brightness starts from the job. A smart bulb will often go in an E27 lamp if it suits the cap and the space, which is the simple route to control from a phone.

What should you buy after the floor lamp?

Whatever the room is still missing. A floor lamp is one layer, and our normal living room target is around five to seven useful light sources across ceiling, wall, table and floor, as our layering guide sets out. We would usually look next at a table lamp for the other end of the sofa, and our table lamp guide covers that. If an old lamp just needs a new top, read how to choose a lampshade. If there is no socket where you want one, read whether rechargeable lamps are any good and look at rechargeable floor lamps.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best floor lamp brands?

Among the brands we sell, we would look first at Endon and Interiors 1900 for value, Astro for plain modern designs, and Feiss and Elstead for traditional shapes with some weight in them. We would still buy the lamp ahead of the badge: check its reach, its switch and the bulb it takes, then compare the finish against your room.

What are the trending floor lamps for 2026?

The looks we would call current are single arcs, marble bases and natural materials such as wood and linen, so the Otto and the Malle both sit in that territory. That is our opinion and not a survey. We would not buy a floor lamp for its trend value in any case, because it needs to do a job in the room long after the look has moved on.

What is the best floor lamp for a bedroom?

We would choose a shaded lamp with a foot switch, so you can turn it off without crossing the room. The Highclere suits a corner, and the Stanford suits a reading chair, since its arm moves the light to the page. If you read in bed, our guide to the best bedside lamps for reading is the better place to start, because a bedside lamp is usually the easier fit.

Are integrated LED floor lamps a bad idea?

No, provided the price and the colour are right. Built-in LEDs mean you can never change the colour temperature, so check it first. The Jaspa is 3000K, rated for 30,000 hours and has a five year guarantee, which is a fair bargain at under £100. On an expensive lamp we would want to read the guarantee closely, or choose a replaceable E27 bulb instead.

How many floor lamps does a small living room need?

One is usually plenty. A small room rarely has the floor space for two, and a table lamp at the other end of the sofa spreads the light better than a second floor lamp would. Our wider target is around five to seven light sources across a typical living room, and a small room may need fewer. Aim for one floor lamp where you sit.

Do floor lamps need special bulbs in the UK?

No. Most of our picks take a standard E27 or E14 LED, so check the cap and the maximum wattage on the listing. The exceptions here are the Ascoli, which takes a GU10 of 6W at most, and the Jaspa, which has built-in LEDs. A dimmable bulb will not make a non-dimmable lamp dim, so read that line on the listing as well.

Will a floor lamp make my living room feel cosier than the ceiling light?

Yes, in our view, and you can test the idea tonight with any lamp you already own. A shaded floor lamp puts warm light at about seated height, where you actually are, instead of flattening everything from above. Fit a 2700K bulb, turn the ceiling light off or right down, and judge it after dark.

Measure the gap beside the sofa tonight, decide which job the lamp has to do, and the choice above is down to two. We have been selling lighting for 41 years as a family business, and our Warwickshire showroom is open Monday to Friday if you would rather judge a finish in person. The full range is in living room floor lamps.
