How do I choose wall lights?

What style is right for my room?

It depends on the effect you want. Wall washers sit close to the wall and flood it with even light rather than a single beam. Sconces direct light upwards for a softer, classic look. Single and double wall lights offer one or two light sources for more targeted illumination, and picture lights are designed to show off artwork.
Should I buy upward or downward facing wall lights?

It depends on the mood you're after. Upward-facing wall lights bounce light off the ceiling for a softer, relaxed glow, while downward-facing versions throw light down for a more functional effect, useful over a console table or artwork. Combination fittings that do both give you atmosphere and practicality in one fixture.
How high should wall lights be positioned?

As a guideline, position wall lights around 1.5 to 1.7m from the floor, roughly eye level for most people. That said, always check the fixture's own installation guidance and adjust for the room, since lights flanking a mirror or bed sit a little differently to those lighting a hallway. A qualified electrician can confirm the right point for your wiring.
Can I use wall lights in my bathroom?

Yes, but the fitting needs the right IP rating for its zone. Zone 1 (above the bath, up to 2.25m) and zone 2 (within 0.6m of the bath) both need a minimum of IP44, and zone 0, inside the bath or shower itself, needs low voltage and at least IP67. Where can I use wall lights?

Wall lights work well almost anywhere: living rooms and bedrooms for softer ambient light, hallways and landings where floor space is tight, and either side of a bed instead of table lamps. They're especially useful for layering light in larger rooms, adding atmosphere without relying on one central fitting. Just check the IP rating first if the room is a bathroom or anywhere damp.
How bright are wall lights?

Brightness is measured in lumens, not watts, so check the lumen output on each product page rather than relying on old-style wattage. Wall lights are usually meant to add atmosphere rather than light a whole room, so a lower output than your main ceiling light is normal. If you want flexibility, look for a dimmable option so you can adjust the mood to suit.
Do wall lights need to be wired in, or can I use plug-in versions?

Both are available. Hardwired wall lights connect directly to your home's electrics and need installing by a qualified electrician. Plug-in wall lights have a cable and plug, so they can be fitted without any wiring work, just hang the fitting and plug it in. Can I use a dimmer switch with wall lights?

Many wall lights are dimmable, but not all, so check the specification on the product page before you buy. Fitting a non-dimmable light to a dimmer circuit can cause flickering or shorten the bulb's life. You'll also need a dimmer switch and, in most cases, dimmable bulbs that are compatible with each other. A qualified electrician can advise on the right setup.
