Not in Zones 0, 1 or 2, no. Directly over the bath, over the shower, or within 60cm of the basin, a pendant is the wrong fitting almost every time, because the flex, the lampholder and most shades simply aren't built for that much moisture. Outside those zones, in a bathroom with the room to spare, a pendant can absolutely work.
We get asked this a lot, usually by someone who has fallen for a beautiful pendant on Pinterest and is now trying to work out whether their bathroom will let them have it. The honest answer isn't a flat no. It's a no in the wet zones and a genuine maybe everywhere else, and which one applies to you comes down to how much floor you're working with.
Why pendant lights and bathroom wet zones don't mix

The short version: Zone 0 (inside the bath or shower), Zone 1 (above it, up to 2.25m) and Zone 2 (0.6m beyond that, and around the basin) each carry a minimum IP rating, rising to IP67 for Zone 0.
A pendant struggles against that on construction, not just paperwork. Most pendants are an open lampholder on the end of a fabric or braided flex, built to IP20 at best, no meaningful protection against moisture at all. Manufacturers do make sealed, IP-rated pendants for wet rooms, but that's a specialist fitting, not the sculptural glass or brass pendant you've actually got your eye on. So while a genuinely IP65-rated pendant could, in theory, sit in Zone 1, the pendant you want to buy almost never is one. That's the gap between the regulation and the shopping trip, and it's the bit most guides skate past.
Where can a pendant light go in a bathroom?

The larger-bathroom case for a pendant
This is where we'll happily talk you into it. If you've got a proper family bathroom or an ensuite with real floor area, a single well-placed pendant over the centre of the room, nowhere near the bath, shower or basin, does something recessed downlights never manage: it gives the room a focal point. Four flush downlights in a grid do the job competently and forgettably. One good pendant, hung where nothing is going to splash it, makes the room feel considered rather than merely lit.
We'd still fit it at a sensible IP rating, IP44 if you can find your chosen design in it, because a bathroom stays humid even where the regulations don't insist on a rating. Treat IP44 in the zones as the rule and IP44 outside them as the sensible habit. Do I still need an electrician for a bathroom pendant?
Yes, every time. Any new light fitting or point in a bathroom counts as notifiable electrical work under Part P of the Building Regulations, whatever zone it sits in. It needs a properly RCD-protected circuit and it needs to be installed and certified by a qualified, registered electrician. This isn't the corner to cut to save an afternoon. How low should pendant lights hang over a bathroom vanity?
The same 60cm rule that keeps pendants clear of the bath and shower applies to a vanity, that's Zone 2, extending 60cm out from the basin. If your vanity run is wide enough that the centre point sits genuinely outside that 60cm radius, a pendant can hang there at a normal fitting height, same as anywhere else in the house. If you can't get 60cm clear, don't hang a pendant over the vanity at all. A wall light either side of the mirror does the job without going near the splash zone.
What lights are allowed in a bathroom?
Any fitting is allowed as long as its IP rating matches the zone it's going in. Zone 0 needs IP67, Zone 1 needs at least IP65 (IP44 with a low-voltage supply in some cases), and Zone 2 needs at least IP44. Why are some lights not suitable for bathrooms?
It comes down to construction, not just a rating on a box. A typical pendant is an open lampholder on fabric or braided flex, built to around IP20, with no meaningful protection against moisture. Steam and splash can get into the lampholder and the electrics behind it, which is exactly what an IP rating and the bathroom zone system exist to prevent. That's why a fitting that's perfectly safe in a hallway can be the wrong choice a few feet away in a bathroom.
