The best bathroom lighting layers three things: bright, even light for washing and shaving, a dedicated light either side of (or above) the mirror for grooming, and one softer, warmer source for evenings. Every fitting has to suit the zone it sits in under BS 7671, low voltage and IPX7 inside the bath or shower, at least IPX4 (commonly sold as IP44) above it and around the basin, and any new wiring is a job for a registered electrician, not a Saturday afternoon. We have been selling lighting for 41 years, and the bathroom is the room people get wrong most confidently. Not through carelessness, through good taste applied to the wrong brief: a beautiful pendant that cannot legally hang where you want it, a single flush ceiling light doing three jobs at three different times of day, downlights bought by the box without anyone working out how many the room actually needs. Planning a bathroom lighting scheme: the three layers
A bathroom needs the same layered thinking as any other room, ambient, task and accent, just compressed into a smaller space and constrained by water. Skip a layer and the room either feels clinical or leaves you shaving in your own shadow.
- Ambient. The general light that fills the room, usually a central flush or semi-flush fitting, or a run of downlights. This is what you switch on to get in and out of the room safely.
- Task. Focused light where you actually do things, above all at the mirror, where flat, shadow-free light either side of your face matters more than any other fitting in the room.
- Accent. The layer everyone forgets and the one that turns a bathroom into something you enjoy being in, a warm LED strip under a vanity unit or along a shelf, dimmed low for an evening bath.
Our house opinion: most bathrooms are lit for the ambient layer alone, one central fitting, on or off, nothing else. That gets you a room that works at seven in the morning and feels like a service station the rest of the time. Three switches, or one dimmable circuit and one accent circuit, cost very little extra to wire in and change how the room feels. Bathroom lighting zones and IP ratings, briefly
UK bathrooms are split into zones under BS 7671, and every fitting you choose has to be rated for the zone it goes in. In plain terms, Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower itself, low voltage only and rated IPX7, fully submersible. Zone 1 is the space above the bath or shower up to 2.25m from the floor, minimum IPX4 (commonly sold as IP44). Zone 2 covers 0.6m beyond Zone 1, and the space around a basin within 60cm, also minimum IPX4. Outside those zones, a standard indoor-rated fitting is fine.
Any new wiring or circuit work in a bathroom is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations, and it should be done, or at least signed off, by a qualified, registered electrician. Mirror and vanity lighting: the layer that actually matters most
If a client only had budget for one good bathroom light, we would spend it here. Overhead light alone throws a shadow straight down your face while you shave or do your make-up, which is precisely the moment you most need to see clearly. Light either side of the mirror at roughly face height, or a well-chosen illuminated mirror, solves it properly. Go a touch cooler and cleaner than the rest of the room, around 3500K to 4000K with a high CRI, so colours read true rather than flattering-but-wrong.
This is worth getting right because it is the fitting you stand closest to and use most deliberately. Small and windowless bathrooms
A small or windowless bathroom (an ensuite, a downstairs cloakroom, a shower room under the stairs) has the opposite problem to a large family bathroom. There is nowhere to hide a bad decision, and no daylight to soften one. A single flush light and nothing else is the most common failure we see here, it flattens the whole room and makes a small space feel smaller.
The fix is usually restraint done well rather than more fittings, warm, well-placed light, a mirror light that earns its keep, and colour choices that do not fight the lighting. Downlights: how many, and how far apart
Downlights are the default ambient layer in most modern bathrooms, and for good reason, they are unobtrusive, work well in low ceilings, and give even general light. The mistake is guessing the number. Too few and the room has dark corners, too many and you have paid for light nobody needed and created a room with no shadow or softness left in it at all.
Spacing depends on ceiling height, beam angle and the fittings' output, worth getting precisely right rather than guessed. Extractor fan and light combination units
A combined extractor fan and light earns its place in a small bathroom or an ensuite with limited ceiling space, one fitting doing two jobs, one hole in the ceiling instead of two. They are not automatically the right choice for every room though, and the light output on some combo units is a genuine compromise against a dedicated fitting. We would rather you choose deliberately than default to a combo because it is what was already there.

LED strip and mood lighting
This is the layer that turns a bathroom from purely functional into somewhere you actually want to spend twenty minutes with a bath and a book. A warm LED strip under a floating vanity, along a recessed shelf, or behind a mirror gives the room a soft, low-level glow for evenings without switching on the main light at all. Pendant lights in a bathroom: yes, sometimes
People assume pendants are banned from bathrooms outright. They are not, they are zone-restricted like everything else, and in a bathroom with a reasonably high ceiling and space outside Zones 0 to 2, a pendant can be a genuinely lovely centrepiece rather than a rule you are not allowed to break. What you cannot do is hang a decorative, non-rated pendant directly over a bath or shower and hope for the best.

Colour temperature for bathrooms
As a general rule, keep the ambient layer warm, 2700K to 3000K, so the room feels calm rather than clinical, and go slightly cooler at the mirror, 3500K to 4000K with a high CRI, so you can actually trust what you see when you shave, apply make-up or check a spot that has been bothering you for a week. Daylight-white bulbs (5000K and up) across a whole bathroom are the fastest way to make an expensive tiling job look like a hospital corridor.
