No, not all LED lights are dimmable. Only bulbs printed or packaged as 'dimmable' can be turned down safely, because dimming needs special driver electronics inside the bulb. To dim them you pair those dimmable LEDs with an LED-rated dimmer, and in the UK that almost always means a trailing-edge dimmer rather than an old leading-edge one. Get either half wrong and you get flicker, buzz, or a bulb that dies early.
This is the single most common lighting muddle we field, and it is almost never the customer's fault. The packaging is vague, the old dimmer looks identical to the new kind, and nobody tells you that the cheap supermarket multipack of bulbs was never going to dim in the first place. So here is the whole thing, plainly: which LEDs dim, how to check, which dimmer to buy, and why yours is probably flickering. We will also tell you where we would happily overrule you.
Are all LED lights dimmable?
No, and assuming they are is where most of the trouble starts. A dimmable LED contains extra circuitry in its driver that can cope with a chopped-up power supply and translate it into a smooth change in brightness. A non-dimmable LED has no such thing. Feed it less power and it does not gently fade. It flickers, strobes, hums, drops out, or simply carries on at full whack until the strain kills it.
Our firm opinion: buy dimmable from the very start if there is the slightest chance you will ever want a dimmer in that room. The saving on non-dimmable bulbs is a false economy the moment you fit a dimmer and have to replace the lot. Dimmable LEDs cost a little more and remove an entire category of future headache. On an island, a dining table, a bedroom, or a living room, we would not fit anything else.
How do I know if my LED bulb is dimmable?
You do not guess, you check. There are three reliable places to look, in order of ease.
- The bulb itself. Most dimmable LEDs have the word 'dimmable', or a little dimmer symbol, printed on the glass, the collar, or the base. A crossed-out dimmer icon means the opposite.
- The packaging. The box or the technical specification will state 'dimmable' outright. If it is silent on the subject, assume it is not. Makers who build a dimmable bulb are keen to tell you, because it is a selling point.
- The manufacturer's website. Lost the box and the print has rubbed off? Find the model number on the base and search the maker's spec page. It will confirm dimming, and the good ones list the dimmer switches they have tested it with.
That last step, checking the maker's tested compatibility list, is the one nearly everyone skips and the one that saves the most grief. If a bulb brand and a dimmer brand have been tested together and published as a pair, believe them over the internet.
What happens if you dim a non-dimmable LED?
Nothing good, and possibly something expensive. A non-dimmable driver is built to receive a steady, full supply. A dimmer gives it a deliberately interrupted one, and the driver has no way to make sense of that. In practice you get some combination of the following.
- Visible flicker or an aggressive strobe, usually worst in the bottom half of the dimmer's travel.
- An audible buzz or hum from the bulb or the switch.
- The light cutting out entirely, or refusing to come on until you push the dimmer well up.
- Thermal stress inside the driver that quietly cooks it. A bulb rated for tens of thousands of hours can fail in a fraction of that.
So no, you are not going to burn the house down with a mismatched bulb, but you will ruin the bulb and the effect. It is worth being clear on the safe direction of the mismatch: a dimmable bulb in an ordinary, non-dimming fixture is perfectly fine, it simply runs at full brightness. It is the other way round, a non-dimmable bulb on a dimmer, that you must not do.
Leading edge or trailing edge? Matching the dimmer to your LEDs
This is the part that actually decides whether your dimming works, and it is the part shops rarely explain. There are two kinds of mains dimmer, and for LEDs they are not interchangeable.

Our position is not subtle: for LED lighting, fit a trailing-edge dimmer and be done with it. It has the low minimum load that low-wattage LEDs need, it runs silently, and it eases the bulbs on with a soft start that is kinder to the driver. A leading-edge dimmer left over from the halogen era is the commonest reason a perfectly good dimmable LED still flickers. In the UK the trailing-edge workhorses people rate are the Varilight V-Pro and the British General trailing-edge ranges, both with an adjustable minimum-brightness trim.
One trap that catches even careful people: the load rating on the box is for incandescent, and LEDs are derated hard. A dimmer marked 400W will typically only carry around 10% of that in LED, so roughly 40W. Count your bulbs' wattage and stay inside the dimmer's LED range, top and bottom. And because this is mains wiring, fitting the switch is a job for a qualified electrician, not a Sunday afternoon.
Why do my LED lights flicker or buzz when dimmed?
Assuming the bulbs really are dimmable, flicker and buzz almost always trace back to one of a short list of causes. Work down it in order.
- Wrong dimmer type. A leading-edge dimmer driving LEDs is the number one culprit. Swapping to a trailing-edge, LED-rated dimmer fixes most cases outright.
- Too little load. Every dimmer has a floor. Three 5W bulbs on a dimmer that wants 30W minimum will flicker or drop out. Either add fittings to the circuit or fit a low-minimum trailing-edge dimmer.
- An untuned low-end. Many LED dimmers have a small trim dial or setup routine to set the lowest stable brightness. Turn it up a touch until the flicker at the bottom of the range disappears.
- Ghosting or afterglow. A faint glow when the switch is off is usually a tiny residual voltage in the wiring that efficient LEDs pick up. It is an installation quirk your electrician can resolve.
- A genuine mismatch. Some bulb and dimmer pairings just do not get on. This is exactly what the manufacturer's compatibility list exists to prevent, so check it before buying, not after.
What you should not do is put up with it. Flicker at low levels is not 'just how LEDs are'. It is a sign that one of the pieces is wrong, and it is fixable.
Does the fixture have to be dimmable, or just the bulb?
For a normal fitting that takes a replaceable bulb, it is the bulb and the dimmer switch that matter, not the fixture. A pendant or a lamp is just a holder. Put a dimmable LED in it, wire it to a trailing-edge dimmer, and it dims.
The exception is an integrated LED fitting, the kind where the LEDs are built in and there is no bulb to change, such as many downlights, panels and LED strips. There the driver is part of the product, so the whole fitting has to be specified as dimmable, and it will usually name the dimming type it wants (trailing-edge, or a dedicated controller for strips). Read the spec before you buy, because you cannot fix a non-dimmable integrated fitting by changing a bulb, there is no bulb to change.
Can you dim LEDs without a dimmer switch?
Yes, and for renters or anyone who would rather not touch the wiring it is the neatest route. Smart bulbs, the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth kind, have the dimming built in and are controlled from an app or a voice assistant, so you get full range dimming on an ordinary switch. Plug-in lamps can use an in-line cord dimmer rated for LEDs. Softening a harsh light with a diffuser or a warmer bulb helps too, though that changes the light rather than truly dimming it. If you own the place and want proper wall-switch dimming across a room, a trailing-edge dimmer and dimmable bulbs is still the better answer.
