Astro Outdoor Wall Lights

Which Astro outdoor wall light should you buy?

Choose the light you want first. The Dartmouth Twin and Elis Twin throw light up and down the wall. The Mast is a compact downward light, 135mm high and IP65. The Richmond 235 is Astro's take on a coach lantern for a period front.

Read the rating and the coastal line

Most of these are IP44 or better, but the Pimlico and other IP23 fittings belong under a proper porch. Astro also says on each datasheet whether a fitting can go within five miles of the coast. The Richmond 235 and Dartmouth Twin can, and the IP65 Mast cannot, so a higher number does not settle it. Our guide to the best outdoor wall lights for a UK garden has the detail, and the Astro Coastal collection starts by the sea.

Built-in LED or a bulb you choose?

About a quarter of this page has built-in LED, such as the Oslo range. The rest take a lamp, mostly E27 or GU10, which is not included. If you want the light to come on as you approach, the Messina Sensor and Homefield Sensor have a microwave sensor built in.

Astro Outdoor Wall Lights Recommendations & Buying Advice

Yes. Astro lists KES Lighting & Home on its own online retailers page. We sell over 110 Astro outdoor wall lights on this page, and many more Astro fittings across the site. Our team can help you read a datasheet before you buy, online any day or at our Warwickshire showroom, open Monday to Friday.

KES does, along with the other online retailers on Astro's own where-to-buy page. Before you choose a retailer, check that the listing shows the exact code, IP rating and coastal line for the fitting you want, because they vary within a range. If you find the same Astro light for less elsewhere, ask us about our price match.

Yes, in our view, and one reason is what it publishes. Every fitting on this page has an Astro datasheet giving the IP rating, mounting position, material and, on most of them, whether it can go within five miles of the coast. That makes it easier to buy the right light, and to spot when one is wrong for your wall.

Our rule of thumb is IP44 or better, from a fitting Astro lists for an exterior wall, with IP65 our pick for a compact modern light on the most exposed wall. IP54 has the same water protection as IP44, and the 5 is for dust. IP23 fittings stay under a proper porch. There is no single legal number, so the datasheet's conditions decide.

Some can, and Astro says which on each datasheet. Within five miles of the coast, roughly a third of this page is cleared and about half is ruled out, and a few datasheets do not say, so ask us about those. Do not judge by the IP number: the IP65 Mast is ruled out, while the IP54 Dartmouth Twin is cleared.

The Dartmouth Twin and Elis Twin are the plain answers, both sending light up and down the wall. The Dartmouth Twin takes two GU10 lamps, and the Elis Twin has a built-in 3000K LED. Oslo fittings do the same in a clean rectangular body, and they are IP65. Check the product page for how each one must be mounted.

Not with most of them. Roughly three quarters take a lamp you buy separately, usually E27 or GU10, and the product page lists the cap and maximum wattage. The rest have built-in LED. Choose warm white at 2700K to 3000K outside, and note that the Nomad Wall 115 needs a separate driver.

Most list three years. Astro's Coastal fittings list ten, except where they have an integral LED or driver, when Astro says three years applies. Our own 12-month guarantee covers everything we sell, and the term for your fitting is on its product page. Fit it where the datasheet allows, so check the coastal line before you order.

We would use one. In England, a new circuit for outdoor lights is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. In Wales, adding outdoor lights is notifiable too, and Scotland has its own rules. Even where a job is not notifiable, a registered electrician is the safe way to get a cable through a wall and sealed against the weather.
