Black Chandeliers

A strong outline for any room

A black chandelier has a clear silhouette that works in a farmhouse kitchen, a modern dining room or a tall hall. This page holds chandeliers finished in black, graphite and black with gold. For every other finish, see all our chandeliers.

From a small room to a grand hall

The Elstead Belfry comes with three or five lights, and the Elstead Carisbrooke with six, eight or twelve. The hand-crafted Elstead Warwick reaches eighteen lights. For a warmer look, the Elstead Minster and Olivia combine black with gold, and the Quintiesse Willow pairs carbon black with deluxe gold.

Check the drop and the bulbs

Widths run from about 42cm to 122cm. Most take E14 candle bulbs, sold separately, and a few take E27 or G9. Check the minimum drop before you order, particularly on a lower ceiling.

Black Chandeliers Recommendations & Buying Advice

Do black chandeliers suit a modern room?

Yes, particularly in simple shapes. The Elstead Belfry and Hinkley Sabina are good examples of cleaner black designs, and they sit well against plain walls and natural wood. A traditional candle style in black can also look modern in a pared-back room. Think about the wall colour: against white, a black chandelier makes a strong outline, while against dark paint it recedes.

What is the difference between a black and a graphite chandelier?

Black is darker and gives a stronger outline. Graphite, as on the Elstead Warwick, has a softer, slightly metallic grey-black look, and it can feel more hand-crafted and traditional. Names vary, so judge them from the photographs and the finish line. If you are matching other black metalwork, order with care, as two black finishes from different makers rarely match exactly.

What size black chandelier do I need?

A common guide is to add the room's length and width in metres and multiply by about 8 for a diameter in centimetres. A 4m by 4m room suggests about 64cm. Those here run from about 42cm to 122cm. Over a dining table, start at about half to two thirds of the table's width, and over a stairwell, consider the whole height of the space.

How high should a chandelier hang?

Leave about 2.1m of clear headroom wherever people walk beneath it. Over a dining table, about 75 to 90cm from the table top to the bottom of the fitting is a good starting point. Check the fitting's listed drop against your ceiling height, as some larger models are made for tall spaces. Ask us if you need to know how far a particular fitting can be shortened.

What bulbs do black chandeliers take?

Most here take E14, with a few taking E27 or G9, and nearly all are sold without bulbs. Candle bulbs look natural on an open black frame, as you will see them. Choose a warm white 2700K LED and check the number you need, which can be as many as eighteen. If you plan to dim the fitting, buy dimmable bulbs and a compatible dimmer.

Does a black chandelier give less light than a crystal one?

Not from the bulbs themselves, but it reflects less around the room. Crystal and polished metal scatter light, whereas a black frame absorbs some of it, so the room can feel moodier. Use enough lights for the space, choose brighter bulbs within the listed maximum, and consider adding wall lights or lamps. That also gives you a softer choice for the evening.

When is a black chandelier the wrong choice?

When the ceiling is too low for its minimum drop, or the fixing cannot take its weight. A heavy black frame can also dominate a very small room, and a pale chandelier may feel lighter there. Check the weight and drop on the product page, and ask a qualified electrician to confirm the ceiling fixing before you buy a larger fitting.
