Blue Lamps

Blue lamps, from pale to deep

A blue lamp adds colour to a room without you having to repaint. This page holds table lamps and a floor lamp where blue is the main finish. For everything else, see all our table lamps.

Porcelain, glass and painted

For a traditional look, the Elstead Blue Ginger Jar and Blue Willow are porcelain patterned in blue and white. For a lighter look, the Elstead Lena and Quintiesse Samara are blue-tinted glass. The Alora Mood Poppy is a modern LED lamp in cerulean light blue, and the Endon Carnaby and Zigzag floor lamp is painted in Satin Marlin Blue.

Bulbs and shades

Most take a standard E27 bulb, sold separately. A warm white bulb keeps a blue finish looking rich in the evening. Check whether the lamp comes with a shade before you buy.

Blue Lamps Recommendations & Buying Advice

Blue sits well with white and cream for a fresh look, and with warm brass or gold for contrast. Darker blues suit natural wood and greys. A blue and white porcelain lamp, like the Elstead Blue Willow, works well in a traditional room and picks up patterned fabric. Try to repeat the blue once elsewhere in the room, perhaps in a cushion or picture.

Porcelain gives a solid, opaque colour with a glazed finish, and it may have a pattern, as on the Elstead Blue Hex. Tinted glass lets light through, so the colour looks lighter and more changing, as on the Elstead Lena or Quintiesse Samara. Porcelain feels more traditional, and glass more modern. Both can break if knocked, so place them on a stable table.

Most here take E27, and a warm white 2700K LED is the usual choice. Cooler light can make some blues look flat or slightly grey. Check the maximum wattage and cap on the product page, as most are sold without a bulb. The Alora Mood Poppy has an integrated LED, so it does not need one, and it will not take a replacement bulb.

It varies, so check the title and listing. The Elstead Lena comes in versions with or without an off-white shade, and the Elstead Blue Globe comes with a grey shade. The Endon Carnaby and Zigzag floor lamp is listed with a 35cm shade. A plain white or cream shade lets a blue base stand out, and a grey one gives it a calmer, quieter look.

Yes, and a pair of blue lamps on bedside tables is a simple way to add colour. Choose softer shades for a calm feel, such as a tinted glass or pale glaze. Keep the bulb warm and moderate in output for evening use. Check the height against your bedside table, as the bottom of the shade should sit near eye level when you are sitting up.

The table lamps here start at about 352mm, and the tallest reach about 790mm. The Endon Carnaby and Zigzag floor lamp is about 1.58m tall. Measure the table or shelf, and work out how the shade will sit in relation to you when you are seated. Bigger lamps suit a sideboard or deep side table, not a narrow bedside table.

When it has to fit in with a strong existing colour, such as bold red or orange walls, unless you want the contrast. It can also get lost against a similar blue wall. In those cases, try a pale cream or brass lamp, or test the colour by holding up a sample. Blue glass in very dim light can also look much darker.
