Glass Wall Lights

Wall lights with glass shades

Glass gives a wall light a clean look and lets light spread further than an opaque shade. This page holds indoor wall lights with glass shades or diffusers, from slim bathroom lights to traditional fittings. For every other style, see all our wall lights.

Choosing the glass

Clear glass shows the bulb and gives the most sparkle, and seeded glass, with its small bubbles, softens that a little. Ribbed glass adds texture, and opal glass hides the bulb altogether for an even glow. The Endon Marietta and Quintiesse Braelyn are traditional choices, and the Astro Luga is a simple white glass option.

Rooms and bulbs

Many are IP44 and made for bathrooms, while others are for dry rooms, so check the listing. G9 and E27 are the most common bulb types, and most are sold without bulbs.

Glass Wall Lights Recommendations & Buying Advice

What is the difference between clear, seeded and opal glass?

Clear glass shows the bulb and gives crisp light, so the bulb needs to look good. Seeded glass has small bubbles that add texture and soften the view of the bulb a little. Opal glass is milky white and hides the bulb, giving an even, gentle glow. For a mirror or bedside light where you can see into the shade, opal is often the most comfortable.
Can glass wall lights be used in a bathroom?

Yes, if the fitting is rated for the position. Many on this page are IP44, which protects against splashing and is commonly used in bathrooms, but the rest are IP20 or list no rating. Check the zone with a qualified electrician, as the rating needed depends on where it is mounted relative to the bath or shower. An IP20 fitting is for dry rooms only.
What bulbs do glass wall lights take?

G9 and E27 are the most common here, with E14 also common, and some have built-in LEDs. Most are sold without a bulb, so check the cap, number and maximum wattage. If the glass is clear, choose a good looking bulb, as it will be seen. A warm white 2700K LED suits most rooms, and it runs cooler than a halogen in a small glass shade.
How high should I fit glass wall lights?

As a guide, about 1.5m to 1.7m from the floor to the centre of the light works in most rooms, and slightly lower in a low room. Beside a mirror, keep the lights around face height. On a stairway, follow the line of the stairs, and check the fitting does not get in the way. Consider where the glass will direct the light before fixing it.
Are glass wall lights easy to clean?

Generally yes, and glass is simpler to wipe than fabric. Switch off the power, let the bulb cool, and clean the shade with a soft cloth and mild glass cleaner. Take shades off to wash them only if the maker allows it, and dry them fully before refitting. Ribbed and seeded glass hide marks well, while clear glass shows dust and limescale more.
Do glass shades give more light than fabric?

Usually, because clear or opal glass lets more light through than a dense fabric or metal shade. Clear glass gives the most direct light, and it can cause glare from a bright bulb, whereas opal spreads light softly. In a dark hallway, one of these can make a real difference. For a softer evening feel, choose a tinted glass and a lower output bulb.
When are glass wall lights the wrong choice?

Where they could easily be knocked, such as in a narrow passage or a child's room, because glass can break. Check the projection from the wall in tight spaces. Clear glass can also be uncomfortable where you look straight at the bulb, such as beside a bed. In those places, go for opal glass or a fabric shade, which hide the bulb better.
