IP65 Downlights

Downlights rated for moisture

An IP65 rating means the front of the fitting is dust tight and protected against water jets, which is why these are often used in bathrooms and covered outdoor spaces. This page holds every IP65 downlight we list, from Astro and Collingwood. See all our spotlights for other ratings.

Built-in LED or GU10

About half have a built-in LED, including the Collingwood H2 and H5 ranges. The others, including many Astro models, take a GU10 lamp sold separately, so you can change the colour or output later.

Check what else you need

Some titles note a separate requirement, such as a bezel on certain Collingwood H2 Pro models. Fire rating is a separate matter and is not covered by the IP rating, so check that line on the product page if your ceiling needs it. Models with both are in IP65 fire rated downlights.

IP65 Downlights Recommendations & Buying Advice

What does IP65 mean on a downlight?

The first figure, 6, means the fitting is dust tight. The second figure, 5, means protection against water jets from any direction. So an IP65 downlight is much better protected than an IP20 or IP44 fitting. The rating usually applies from below and may differ above, as on the Collingwood H2 Lite, which lists IP65 from below and IP20 from above. Check the product page.

Do I need IP65 downlights in a bathroom?

It depends on the zone. Lights close to or above a bath or shower need a suitable rating, and the rules can change depending on the position. Astro lists its Minima Round Fixed IP65 for bathroom zones 1 and 2. Outside the zones, a lower rating can be fine, but many people choose IP65 anyway. A qualified electrician should confirm what your bathroom needs.

Is IP65 the same as fire rated?

No, they are different tests. IP65 is about dust and water, and a fire rating is about how the fitting behaves in a ceiling during a fire. Some models here have both, such as the Collingwood H2 Lite and Astro Minima Slimline, but do not assume so. Check the title and the product page, and ask your electrician what your ceiling requires.

Should I choose built-in LED or GU10 IP65 downlights?

A built-in LED is a sealed unit, often with a neat finish and a long rated life, but you replace the fitting when it fails. A GU10 model lets you change the bulb, including its colour and output. About half of these are each type. In a bathroom, a warm white of 2700K or 3000K is kinder on skin tones, and a built-in model may offer a choice of colours.

Are IP65 downlights suitable for outdoors?

Many are suited to a covered outdoor space such as a soffit, porch or canopy, but check the listing, as some are described only for bathrooms. The Astro Kos II and Collingwood H2 Pro Extreme are named for outdoor use. Having IP65 alone does not always mean a model suits outdoor use, so check the product page and ask us if unsure.

Can IP65 downlights be dimmed?

Many can, but it depends on the fitting, bulb and dimmer. On GU10 models, Astro often lists dimming as lamp dependent, so you need a dimmable bulb. Collingwood lists several H2 and H5 models as dimmable in the title. Check the dimmer's compatibility too, as low-wattage LEDs can flicker on older dimmers. A short test before fitting a whole room is sensible.

When are IP65 downlights not needed?

In dry rooms such as a living room or hallway, where a lower rated downlight is enough, and it may cost less. You may still want one for its finish or LED, but the rating itself does not improve the light. An IP65 fitting also does not remove the need for a suitable fire rating or the right installation. Your electrician can advise.
