What height should a table lamp be?

Aim for the bottom of the shade to sit at about eye level when you are seated. On a normal side table that puts the top of the lamp roughly 1.5m from the floor. Any higher and you see the bulb from the sofa, any lower and the lamp lights the table rather than the room.
What size shade suits a table lamp?

Two rules of thumb. The shade should be about twice the width of the base at its widest point, so a 20cm base takes roughly a 40cm shade, and the shade should be about a third of the total finished height. It also has to be deep enough to hide the bulb and lampholder from someone sitting down.
What is the difference between a table lamp and a bedside lamp?

Scale, mostly. A bedside lamp is smaller and its job is to light a book without waking the person beside you, so it is usually around 40 to 55cm tall with a narrower shade. A table lamp is bigger and lights a corner of a room. The fittings are otherwise the same, and plenty of designs come in both sizes.
What bulb goes in a table lamp?

Most take E27 or the smaller E14 cap, and the product page states which along with the maximum wattage. For a warm domestic light choose 2700K, and check the bulb is dimmable if the lamp has a dimmer switch. A clear filament bulb looks right in an open frame, an opal one is kinder under a plain shade.
Can table lamps be dimmed?

Yes, if the lamp and the bulb both allow it. Some of ours have an inline or rotary dimmer in the switch, and any lamp on a dimmed socket works too. The bulb must be marked dimmable, and expect it to go down to around 10% of full output rather than to nothing. A non-dimmable LED on a dimmer flickers or buzzes.
Are shades included with table lamps?

It varies by range, so the product page is the authority on each one. Many complete lamps arrive with a matched shade, while bases from the more design-led brands are often sold on their own so you can choose the shade. When is a table lamp not enough?

When the job needs directional light. A shaded table lamp throws a soft pool at low level, which is right beside a sofa and wrong over a desk or a reading chair, where you want 400 lumens or more aimed at the page. Use a task light you can angle for those, and keep the table lamp for the warmth in the corner.
