White Lamp Shades

White shades in every shape

A white shade spreads an even glow and suits almost any base, which makes it the safe choice for a lamp or wall light. This page holds fabric shades in white, mostly Astro polycotton. See all our lamp shades for black, putty, oyster and glass options.

Shapes and sizes

Sizes run from small cones for wall lights and bedside lamps through to the 600mm Astro Bevel Round for a larger fitting. There are drums, tapered rounds, cones, ovals and rectangles. The Astro French Drum and Soft Square come in packs of two. The Endon Ayla is a vintage white cotton scalloped shade, in 22cm, 31cm and 53cm.

White Lamp Shades Recommendations & Buying Advice

What size white lamp shade do I need?

As a starting point, choose a shade about twice the width of the base, and tall enough to hide the bulb and fitting. These run from small cones at about 113mm to the Astro Bevel Round at 600mm, so small sizes suit wall lights and bedside lamps, and large ones suit floor lamps and pendants. Measure your base and test the size with a tape first.

What is the difference between white and vintage white shades?

A pure white shade looks cleaner and brighter, and it suits modern rooms and white paintwork. Vintage white is a softer off-white, as on the Endon Ayla cotton shades, and it looks warmer against older furniture and cream walls. Both give a soft glow when lit. If your walls are warm white, a very bright white shade can look slightly blue next to them.

Will a white shade fit my lamp?

Check how it attaches as well as its size, as shades do not fit every lamp. The Endon Ayla 22cm uses a clip gimbal, for example, and fits both E14 and B22 lampholders, according to the listing. For Astro shades, check the product details for fittings. If you are not sure, send us the make and model of your lamp, or a photograph of it.

Can a lamp shade be used on a ceiling pendant?

Some can, but it depends on the fitting and the shade design, so do not assume a lamp shade will hang level on a pendant set. Check the product details and the maximum bulb wattage, and make sure the shade can hang level. For a very low room, choose a shallower drum, and keep about 2.1m clear beneath the fitting wherever people walk.

How do I clean a white fabric lamp shade?

Switch off the lamp and let it cool first. Use a soft brush or lint roller to lift dust from the fabric, working from the top. For a small mark, dab gently with a slightly damp cloth, and test on an inconspicuous area first. Do not soak the shade, because it may damage the structure, and let it dry fully before using the lamp.

What bulb works best under a white shade?

A warm white 2700K LED suits most homes, as it gives white fabric a warm glow. Cooler bulbs can make a white shade look stark. Stay within the lamp's listed maximum wattage, and leave a gap between the bulb and the fabric. An LED is the sensible choice here, as it runs cooler than a halogen or incandescent bulb giving similar light.

When is a white lamp shade the wrong choice?

When you want a dramatic pool of light or a strong outline against a pale wall, as a white shade tends to blend in. Black or metal shades do that better. A white shade may also show marks in a busy room or near a kitchen. A mid-tone putty or oyster shade is a good alternative when you want a softer, warmer look.
