LED strip lights work best in a bathroom as a second, lower layer under your main light, not a replacement for it. Run it under a vanity or floating basin unit, along a kickboard, inside a recessed niche, or in ceiling coving. Choose warm white (around 2700 to 3000K), fit an IP-rated strip for the zone it sits in, and keep it dimmer than the main light, always.

We fit a lot of bathrooms, and LED strip lights are the easiest way to make one feel considerably more expensive than it cost. It is also the easiest way to make it look like a service station forecourt, if you get it wrong. The difference is not the strip you buy, it is where you put it and how bright you let it get. What does LED strip actually add over the main light?

A ceiling light or downlights on their own do a job, but they do it flatly, the same light from the same direction, everywhere. Strip lighting adds depth. It picks out the edge of a vanity unit, the underside of a shelf, or the curve of a niche, and lets those edges glow instead of sitting there lit from above. That is the difference between a bathroom that looks functional and one that looks like the boutique hotel you have been quietly trying to recreate. It earns its keep at 2am too, enough light to find the toothpaste without a ceiling light bright enough to wake the house.

Where to put LED strip lighting in a bathroom

Some spots earn their keep every time, others are more effort than they are worth. Here is roughly the order we would prioritise.

Warm white or cool white for bathroom mood lighting?

Warm white, every time, and we would push back on anyone who tells you otherwise. Bathroom strip lighting should relax you, not interrogate you, and a cool blue-white strip does the second whether you meant it to or not. Aim for roughly 2700 to 3000K, the same warm range as a good table lamp. It flatters skin tone at the mirror and makes tiles and stone look considered rather than clinical, particularly at 11pm when you are winding down. Cool white has its place in a utility room where you need to see clearly and do not much care how you feel about it. A bathroom is not that room.

Colour-changing and smart strips: worth it, in moderation

App-controlled, colour-changing strip earns its keep for one reason: switching between a bright, neutral white for shaving and a warm, dim glow for an evening bath, at the tap of a phone. Where it goes wrong is the sixteen million colours. A strip that cycles through violet, teal and lime is enormous fun for a week, then it sits permanently on one warm-white preset, because nobody wants a pink bathroom on a Tuesday morning. Buy the smart, dimmable, warm-white-capable strip for the flexibility, and treat the colour wheel as a party trick, not the reason you bought it.

IP ratings and safe installation

LED strip near a bath, shower or basin has to match the IP rating for the zone it sits in, the same rules as any other bathroom fitting. Broadly, anything inside the bath or shower needs IPX7 on a low-voltage (12V) supply, and strip within the surrounding splash zones needs at least IPX4/IP44. Mains-voltage wiring and transformers should be installed by a qualified, registered electrician, kept out of the wet zones. Doing it well versus doing it badly

The single biggest mistake we see is strip lighting used as a second main light rather than a supporting one. If you can read a book by your kickboard lighting, it is too bright. Mood lighting should sit quietly under the main light, not compete with it.

  • Doing it well: a dimmable, warm-white strip tucked out of sight, on its own switch separate from the main light.
  • Doing it badly: a bright, un-dimmed strip in full view, running cool white, wired to the same switch as the ceiling light.
  • Our rule of thumb: if a guest would call your bathroom 'a bit clinical' or 'a bit much', the strip lighting is usually why.

Can you use LED strip lights in a bathroom?

Yes, as long as the strip's IP rating matches the zone it goes in and the transformer sits outside the wet areas. It is one of the most common and most effective bathroom upgrades we see, not a niche or risky choice, provided the rating is right for where it is fitted.

Do LED strips run up the electric bill?

Not really. A typical vanity or kickboard run draws a fraction of what your downlights do, and it is usually on for minutes at a time rather than hours. Leave it burning on a timer all day and that changes, but used as intended, as an accent rather than the main light, the cost is negligible next to running a shower.

How long do waterproof LED strips last?

A decent IP44 or IPX7 strip from a reputable brand should run 25,000 to 50,000 hours before it dims meaningfully, which is years of daily bathroom use. When strip fails early it is rarely the LEDs themselves, it is usually a seal failing at a cut end or a connector that was never properly sealed, so get those joins done properly rather than trusting a cheap strip's rating out of the box.

Are LED strip lights good for moisture in bathrooms?

They can be, provided the rating matches the actual exposure, not just the number printed on the box. A splash-rated strip copes fine with condensation and steam in a reasonably ventilated bathroom, but anywhere inside a shower needs the higher IPX7 rating on a low-voltage supply. Poor ventilation is often the real culprit when strip fails early, no fitting lasts long in a room that never properly dries out.

Do I need an electrician to install LED strip lights?

For the transformer and any mains-voltage wiring, yes, always. The low-voltage strip itself can often be fitted DIY once the supply is in place, but bathroom electrical work generally falls under Part P, and a registered electrician keeps the transformer out of the wet zones and signs the work off properly. Not a corner worth cutting.

How do you fix a LED strip in a bathroom that has stopped working?

Most bathroom strip faults come down to one of three things: a connector that has taken on damp, a dead section past a badly made cut point, or a failed transformer. Check the connectors first, bathroom humidity finds its way into a cheap clip connector faster than anywhere else in the house. If the fault sits beyond a cut or joint, that section is usually the problem. A failed transformer is an electrician's job, not a DIY fix.
