The best bathroom mirror lighting sits either side of the mirror at face height, not just above it, using a neutral daylight-balanced bulb (4000K to 5000K, CRI 90 or higher) and rated at least IP44. Side lighting kills the under-eye and chin shadows a single strip above the mirror always throws. Get that right and you can apply make-up or shave by a light that tells the truth, not a bathroom guess.

We fit out a lot of bathrooms, and the mirror is where lighting goes wrong most often. The ceiling gets a downlight or two and the mirror gets whatever fitting was going cheap. That is backwards: it is where you actually look at yourself under artificial light every day.

Why light around the mirror, not just above it?

A single light source above a mirror shines straight down, so a face gets light on the forehead and nose and shadow everywhere else, under the eyes, under the chin, down the sides of the nose. It is the least flattering way to light a face there is, and the most common set-up we see. Light from the sides instead, or as well, fills in exactly those shadows, which is why every make-up artist's mirror is lit from either side of the glass, not with a single bar clamped to the top of the frame.

  • Top-lit only: one fitting above the mirror. Cheapest and easiest, and the one we would talk you out of as your only light there.
  • Side-lit or surround-lit: a wall light either side of the mirror, or light built into the frame edge. Genuinely better for the face.
  • Illuminated or backlit mirror: the light is built into the mirror itself, around the perimeter or diffused behind the glass, what most shoppers are actually searching for when they type 'LED bathroom mirror'. The tidiest of the three.

If you can only do one thing to upgrade a bathroom mirror, do this: add light to the sides, even if you keep the fitting above too. One extra wall light is the single biggest improvement you can make to how you look getting ready in the morning.

Are illuminated and backlit mirrors worth it?

Yes, and we would put them ahead of a separate light fitting for most bathrooms. What people are picturing when they say 'illuminated mirror' is what the trade, and most search bars, now call an LED bathroom mirror: the light sits right at the glass, evenly around the frame or diffused behind it, consistent and shadow-free with nothing extra to mount. The catch: you are relying on the mirror's own light quality, so its colour temperature and CRI matter even more, see below. A cheap illuminated mirror with a low-CRI blue-white ring is a downgrade on a good pair of wall lights; a well-specified one is the best single fitting you can put in a bathroom. (This is about light built into the mirror itself, not a general LED strip along a shelf or plinth for room mood lighting, which is its own job.)

What colour temperature and CRI should mirror lighting be?

Neutral, daylight-balanced light, 4000K to 5000K, with a CRI of 90 or higher, the range that renders skin tone and colour accurately for make-up or shaving. A warm, cosy 2700K bulb flatters everywhere else in the house, but on a mirror it lies to you, reading more forgiving than it really is. A cheap cold blue-white strip swings the other way, harsh and often just as poor on CRI. Neutral daylight-balanced with a genuinely high CRI is the only setting that tells you the truth.

CRI rarely gets printed as prominently as colour temperature, so check the spec rather than assuming a 4000K bulb is automatically a good one.

What IP rating does a bathroom mirror light need?

A mirror light almost always sits in Zone 2, within 60cm of a basin, or Zone 1 if mounted over or beside a bath, and both need a minimum of IPX4, sold in the UK as IP44. The mistake we would talk you out of

A single central downlight above the mirror as the only light in the whole bathroom. We see it constantly, one recessed spot doing the ceiling's job and the mirror's job at once, and it does neither well: flat, shadow-heavy light on your face and a gloomy room everywhere else. A bathroom needs layered light, general ceiling light plus dedicated light at the mirror, and the two are not interchangeable. If your budget stretches to one upgrade, spend it at the mirror.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need an electrician to install a LED bathroom mirror?

If it wires into the mains, yes. A bathroom is a special-risk zone under Part P of the Building Regulations, so any hardwired fitting, including an LED bathroom mirror, has to go in and be signed off by a qualified electrician, exactly like any other bathroom light. Some low-power mirrors run off a shaver socket or a plug outside the zones, which sidesteps the wiring job, but check where that socket actually sits before you assume it counts. Don't guess on this one.

What are the disadvantages of LED mirrors?

Two genuine ones, and we would rather tell you than sell round them. First, the light is built in, so when it eventually fails you are not swapping a bulb, you are looking at a repair or a new mirror, which is why the warranty matters as much as the finish. Second, a cheap one hides a low-CRI light behind a flattering glow, so it looks premium in the showroom and lies to you every morning at the glass. Neither is a reason to avoid them, both are reasons to buy a properly specified one rather than the cheapest listing on the page.

Why are LED mirrors so expensive?

Because a good one is three products in one: a mirror, a light fitting engineered to a bathroom IP rating, and often a demister pad or touch sensor as well, all sealed into a single unit. Strip any of that out and the price drops fast, which is exactly how the cheap ones get cheap, thinner glass, a lower CRI light source, no demister, a sensor that gives up within a year. You are paying for the engineering that keeps electronics safe next to a shower, not just the glow round the edge.

What is the lifespan of a LED bathroom mirror?

The LEDs themselves are good for years of daily use, that part rarely fails first. What actually gives up earlier is everything around it, a cheap driver, a demister pad, a touch sensor, especially in a steamy, poorly ventilated bathroom. Buy from a brand that backs the whole unit with a proper warranty rather than one that only quotes an LED hours figure, and make sure the room has decent extraction, damp shortens the life of anything electrical in there.

What to look for when buying a LED mirror for a bathroom?

Four things, in order. IP44 as an absolute minimum for its zone. A colour temperature of 4000K to 5000K with a CRI of 90 or higher, most spec sheets bury this, so check before you buy, not after. A genuine warranty on the electronics, not just the glass. And, if the room runs steamy, a demister pad, an illuminated mirror that fogs up straight after a shower has defeated the point of it. Get those four right and you are choosing between finishes, not gambling on the fitting.
