Black Downlights

Downlights that stand out on purpose

A black downlight turns a practical fitting into a design detail, especially against a dark ceiling or with black taps and handles. This page holds matt and textured black downlights from Astro and Collingwood. See all our spotlights for white, chrome and steel.

Indoor, bathroom and outdoor

Astro's Minima, Koto and Apollo 100 are indoor models, the Minima also comes as an IP65 bathroom version, and the Astro Kos and Collingwood H2 Pro Extreme are outdoor designs. More than half are IP65, and the rest are IP20 for dry rooms.

Bulbs and fittings

Most take a GU10 lamp, sold separately, and some have built-in LEDs. Astro's Ascoli Twin and Minima Round Twin have two heads in one fitting. Some Minima models are fire rated, as the title shows, so check this if your ceiling needs it.

Black Downlights Recommendations & Buying Advice

Do black downlights give less light than white ones?

The bulb's output is the same, but a black fitting reflects less, so the light can feel a little more focused. The ceiling looks different too: a black ring stands out on a white ceiling and disappears on a dark one. If you need a brighter room, increase the number of lights or the lumens rather than the finish. The difference is usually small.

Are black downlights suitable for a bathroom?

Only if rated for the position. More than half of these are IP65, including the Astro Minima Round Fixed Bathroom and Astro Ottawa Bathroom models, and the others are IP20 for dry rooms. Astro lists the Minima Round Fixed IP65 for bathroom zones 1 and 2. A qualified electrician should confirm the zone. Black fittings suit black taps and shower frames particularly well.

What is the difference between matt black and textured black downlights?

Matt black is smooth with little shine, and it suits interiors such as kitchens, hallways and bathrooms. Textured black has a slightly rough surface and is more common on outdoor models such as the Astro Kos. Both have a low sheen. Choose textured for exposed positions, and matt for a clean interior look, but always check the IP rating, as the finish alone does not protect it.

What bulb goes in a black downlight?

Most here take GU10, sold separately, which lets you choose the colour and beam. Some have built-in LEDs, such as the Collingwood H2 Lite, so there is no bulb to buy. A warm white 2700K to 3000K suits most rooms. Check the maximum wattage and whether the fitting can dim. A narrow beam looks more dramatic, and a wide beam lights the room more evenly.

How far apart should black downlights be?

A useful starting point is about 1.2m to 1.5m apart, but it depends on ceiling height, beam and what you want to light. Black fittings are more noticeable, so plan the layout carefully and keep the lines straight. Space them evenly, and around 50cm to 60cm from the walls is a good guide. Sketching the positions on a plan first will save you holes later.

Do black downlights look good on a white ceiling?

Yes, but they are a feature, so use them on purpose. A neat row over a kitchen island or along a corridor can look sharp, particularly with other black details in the room. A very high number of them on a white ceiling can look busy. If you want the fittings to disappear, choose white, or paint the ceiling a darker colour.

When are black downlights the wrong choice?

When you want the ceiling to stay clean and uninterrupted, as a black ring draws the eye on a white ceiling. A white or trimless fitting suits that better. Black is also harder to match across makers, so mixing brands in one room can look uneven. If your other metalwork is chrome or brass, a white downlight may sit more comfortably with it.
