Black Floor Lamps

A clean black line in the room

A black floor lamp gives a simple outline against a pale wall, and it sits well with most furniture. This page holds floor lamps where black is the main finish. All other designs are in floor lamps.

Reading, tripod and cordless

The Astro Ascoli, Joel and Leda are plain modern lamps in matt black, and the Astro Beaumont and Edward are bases that need a separate shade. The Novena Malle has a tripod base. The Elstead Balance adds polished brass or nickel. For more light, the Schuller Esino and Novena Garcia both have two lights, and the Novena Anello is cordless and rechargeable.

Check the height

Heights run from about 900mm to 1810mm. Most take a standard bulb, often sold separately, so check the listing for cap and maximum wattage.

Black Floor Lamps Recommendations & Buying Advice

Those here run from about 90cm to 1.81m, so measure first. Beside a chair, the bottom of the shade should sit near eye level when you are seated, so the bulb stays out of sight. In a corner, a taller lamp lifts light higher up the wall. Hold a tape in position, as a tall dark lamp can look bigger in the room than in a photograph.

Some come with a shade or head, and some do not. The Astro Beaumont and Edward are listed as REQUIRES SHADE, so buy the shade separately. Others, such as the Novena Malle, come with a fabric shade named in the title. Check the listing before you order. A white shade spreads more light, while a black one keeps it directed up and down.

A tripod lamp stands on three legs, so it has a larger footprint and a stronger presence in a room. It suits a corner or the end of a sofa. A single stem with a base takes up less floor space and suits a tighter spot next to a chair. Check the base width on the product page, as well as the height.

Many take E27, others take GU10 or have built-in LEDs, and most are sold without a bulb, so check the listing. A warm white 2700K LED is a good choice for a living room. If it is for reading, a brighter bulb within the listed maximum helps. Check dimming details on the product page before you add a dimmer, as several are listed as non-dimmable.

Yes, and black has long been used for lamps in older houses. The Elstead Ascent and Balance look at home among antique furniture, especially with a fabric shade. A very industrial design may feel out of place, so look for one with some detail or a brass accent. Black also works well alongside dark wood, though it can vanish against dark paint.

Rarely on its own, because most give light in one part of a room. Use one or two alongside table lamps for evening light, and keep the ceiling light for when you need it. An uplit lamp bounces more from a pale ceiling, and a two-light design such as the Schuller Esino gives you more. A dark ceiling will reflect far less.

In a dark, cramped room, where the lamp can vanish and its base can get in the way. If a cable would have to cross a walkway, a wall light or table lamp is safer. A black lamp is also less suited to a very small white room if you want it to feel unobtrusive. A brass or white design would sit more quietly there.
