Shapes and finishes

The Astro Tacoma range includes small spheres, reeded and tulip shades. The Nara comes in cone, globe and taper shapes, and the Curve Glass is available in clear or dark smoke. White opal hides the bulb and gives an even glow, clear glass shows it, and ribbed glass adds texture.

Check the fit

A glass shade must suit the fitting it will sit on, so measure and check the product details before you order. Widths start at about 90mm, and the largest shade measures about 285mm. If you are not sure, send us the make and model of the light.

Glass Lamp Shades Recommendations & Buying Advice

Check before you buy, as glass shades are less forgiving than fabric. Look at how the shade attaches to your fitting, and measure the opening as well as the shade's size. These are Astro shades, so the product details are the first place to look for matching fittings. If in doubt, send us a photograph of your fitting with its make and model.

Opal glass is milky white and hides the bulb, so it gives a soft, even light across a room. Clear glass shows the bulb and gives sharper light, which suits a good looking filament bulb. Smoke glass keeps the light lower for a more atmospheric look. For a kitchen or bathroom where you want good general light, opal is usually the better choice.

The shade alone does not make a light bathroom safe, because the rating belongs to the whole fitting. Check the IP rating of the wall or ceiling light that it goes on, and keep to the shades the maker lists for that fitting. A qualified electrician can confirm the zone. Bathrooms usually call for at least IP44 where water might splash the fitting.

Use the bulb type and maximum wattage listed for the fitting, as the shade does not change that. Under opal glass, a standard warm white 2700K LED works well, and its shape does not matter much. Under clear or ribbed glass, choose a good looking bulb, as it will be visible. LED is the sensible choice, as glass gets hot with older bulbs.

Switch the light off and let it cool, then take the shade off if it is safe to do so. Wash in warm soapy water and rinse, and dry it thoroughly before refitting. Do not use abrasive pads. Ribbed and reeded glass can gather dust in the grooves, so a soft brush helps. Always make sure the shade is secure when you put it back.

Start with the fitting and the space. The shades here start at about 90mm across, and the largest measures about 285mm. The Astro Tacoma is about 135mm, which suits a pendant or wall fitting, while the Curve Glass 285 gives more presence. Measure the old shade if you are replacing one. For a pendant over a table, also think about how it looks in relation to the table's width.

When the fitting cannot support it, or the shade is likely to be knocked. Glass is heavier than fabric, and it can break in a low doorway or a child's room. Clear glass is also a poor choice when you would see a bright bulb directly. In those cases, consider a fabric shade, or a whole new fitting that is made to take the shade.
