The Best Bedroom Pendant Lights for a UK Home

The best bedroom pendant light has a shade that hides the bulb, so opal glass, frosted glass, fabric or a tight weave, because you look straight up at it from the pillow. Size it at the room's length plus width in metres, times 8, in centimetres: about 52cm for a 3 by 3.5 metre room. Keep 2.1 metres clear where you walk, use a warm 2700K lamp, and put it on a dimmer.

You look at a bedroom pendant from an angle you never see in the shop, which is from underneath, lying down. That one fact rules out a good many fittings that look lovely in a photograph, and it is why this guide starts with the shade instead of the style. Every fitting here is one we sell, with its measurements taken from its listing and its price checked on the date shown.

Can you use a pendant light in a bedroom?

Yes, and we like them there, as long as the pendant is not the only light in the room. Used alone on a plain switch it flattens everything and leaves you reading in your own shadow. Used on a dimmer, with lamps or wall lights beside the bed, it is the light for finding a lost earring and changing the duvet, and it can drop to almost nothing when you do not need it. Our guide to bedroom lighting ideas sets out the whole scheme.

Which bedroom pendant lights are best?

We would buy the shade first, then check the size and the drop. These are the fittings we would start with for each job.

The job What we would hang Size and drop Price, checked 5th November 2026
Main light, 2.4m ceiling Endon Cordero 3 Light 560mm, drop 300 to 1685mm £113.75
Soft fabric on a budget Endon Isabella 500mm, drop 350 to 1750mm £45.95
Linen drum Endon Hayfield 3 Light 566mm, drop 370 to 490mm £120.95
Woven and natural Endon Bali 420mm, drop 450 to 1540mm £82.95
Stone, built-in LED Hudson Valley Draper 394mm, drop 229 to 1601mm £394.00
Beside the bed Alora Mood Arden Mini or Endon Evora Medium 152mm and 220mm, both reach 1.2m £54.88 or £55.95 each

If you only read one line of that table, make it the Endon Cordero 3 Light (£113.75, checked 5th November 2026). Gold-effect fretwork wraps a white fabric shade with frosted glass underneath, which keeps all three lamps out of sight from below. It is 560mm across and adjusts from 300mm, which is what a 2.4 metre ceiling allows over a walkway. The Endon Isabella (£45.95, checked 5th November 2026) is the other end of the argument: a single scalloped shade in vintage white, brushed aged brass at the top, for the price of a decent bedside lamp. Fabric does the work in both, and under £100 we would also look at the Bali, the Arden Mini and the Evora.

The Endon Hayfield 3 Light (£120.95, checked 5th November 2026) in natural linen is the one we would hang in a farmhouse bedroom, with one caution: its drop only runs from 370mm to 490mm. That is fine over the bed, and too long for a walkway under 2.4 metres. For something you will still want to look at in ten years, the Hudson Valley Draper (£394.00, checked 5th November 2026) sets LEDs in the rim of an alabaster disc, and at 229mm it is the shortest drop here.

What size pendant does a bedroom need?

Add the room's length and width in metres, multiply by 8, and read the answer in centimetres. It is a starting point, and the same one we use across our guides. If you are caught between two sizes, take the larger, because a generous pendant looks deliberate and a mean one looks like an accident.

Room Starting diameter Worth a look
3 by 3 metres About 48cm Endon Isabella, 500mm
3 by 3.5 metres About 52cm Endon Cordero 3 Light, 560mm
3.5 by 4 metres About 60cm Endon Hayfield 3 Light, 566mm
4 by 4 metres About 64cm Our extra large pendants

A drum reads larger than an open shape of the same width, so hold a circle of card up to the ceiling on a string before you order. If you can see through a fitting, you can usually go a size up.

How low should a bedroom pendant hang?

Keep 2.1 metres clear wherever people walk. That leaves ceiling height minus 2.1 metres for the whole fitting, and it relaxes directly over the bed, then returns over the walkway round it. These are our starting points, not regulations, and they are the same ones as in our guide to choosing a pendant.

Ceiling Over a walkway Over the bed
2.4m 300mm for the whole fitting Longer is fine, if nobody catches it changing the duvet
2.7m 600mm More room still, so you can size up
3m 900mm A longer drop looks right and stops the light vanishing into the ceiling

Is it safe to hang one directly over the bed? Yes, if it is fixed properly and high enough to clear anyone sitting up. We would hang it over the middle or the foot of the bed instead of above the pillows, because that is where you are looking straight up. Tell your electrician the weight, too: the Cordero is listed at 3.88kg and the Draper at 8.62kg, and they will want to know what they are fixing to.

Below about 2.3 metres we would stop looking at pendants for anywhere you walk, and look at flush and semi-flush fittings instead. Our bedroom ceiling lights have those, and our guide to lighting a low ceiling goes through the sums.

How do you hang bedside pendants?

Hang the base 60 to 80cm above the bedside table, about eye level when you sit up, and 8 to 12cm off the wall so it does not crowd the headboard. Choose something narrower than the table. Then do the sum: under a 2.4 metre ceiling, with a table about 60cm high, the base sits 120 to 140cm off the floor, so the pendant needs a drop of 1 to 1.2 metres.

Fitting Width Longest drop Reaches a 60cm table under 2.4m?
Alora Mood Arden Mini 152mm 2101mm Yes
Endon Evora Medium 220mm 1600mm Yes
Elstead Marvele Mini 140mm 1261mm Yes
Novena Sobrado 275mm 860mm No: 94cm above the table at its longest

The Alora Mood Arden Mini (£54.88, checked 5th November 2026) is built-in LED, opal glass and listed as dimmable, and the Endon Evora Medium (£55.95, checked 5th November 2026) is opal ribbed glass that takes an E27 lamp you choose yourself. The Elstead Marvele Mini (£129.12, checked 5th November 2026) costs more and is smaller still, for a small table. The Novena Sobrado (£126.95, checked 5th November 2026) is a good pendant in the wrong place here, because its drop stops at 860mm.

Wire the two sides to separate switches, so one of you can read while the other sleeps. A pendant moves if you knock it, and it does not aim at a page the way a wall light does, so if you read for hours we would still choose a swing arm: our guide to the best bedside lamps for reading has the heights. If there is no wiring by the bed, read our guide to lighting a bedroom with no ceiling light first.

Which shade works best in a bedroom?

  • Opal glass gives a soft, even glow with no visible lamp, which makes it our default. It is plain when unlit, so the frame has to earn its place.
  • Fabric gives a warm light and softens the ceiling above it. Linen, cotton and pleated shades all work, and a diffuser underneath, like the Cordero's, hides the lamp from below.
  • Woven shades throw a pattern on the ceiling and let some of the lamp show through, so use a warm, good-looking bulb. The Endon Bali (£82.95, checked 5th November 2026) and Alora Mood Kai Small (£87.16, checked 5th November 2026) are the ones to try, and our page of rattan and woven lighting has more.
  • Clear glass and crystal are not on our bedroom page. They can look wonderful with a dimmer in a grand room, but you will see the lamp every night, so buy them with that in mind.

What we would leave in the shop is a bare bulb in an open cage, and a ring of tiny bright LEDs right above the bed. Both look fine in a photograph taken from across the room. Neither looks fine from the pillow.

Which bulb should you use?

A warm white 2700K LED, marked dimmable if the fitting is on a dimmer. Our guide to the best colour temperature for a bedroom has the detail, and bulbs are generally not included, so check the cap and maximum wattage on the listing. Built-in LED fittings settle the colour for you, and you should check whether they dim before you buy: the Schuller Mirena Single (£209.00, checked 5th November 2026) is listed as not dimmable, which would rule it out for us as a main bedroom light.

Can you fit a bedroom pendant yourself?

We would use a qualified electrician. In England, replacing a light like for like is not usually notifiable, but moving a ceiling point or running a new one for a bedside pendant is a bigger job, and Wales has different rules. Tell them the weight from the listing, and leave the fixing and wiring to them.

Are pendant lights going out of style?

No. What moves is the shape and the material, and we would buy for the room. Soft shades, warm metals and plain opal glass have the longest life in a bedroom, and they suit an old house and a new one equally. Choose one you still like from the pillow, and let the trends look after themselves.

The short version

  • Choose a shade that hides the bulb: opal, frosted, fabric or a tight weave.
  • Size it at length plus width in metres, times 8, in centimetres.
  • Keep 2.1m clear where you walk. That leaves 300mm for the whole fitting under a 2.4m ceiling, and it relaxes over the bed.
  • Beside the bed, hang the base 60 to 80cm above the table, 8 to 12cm off the wall. Under 2.4m you need a drop of 1 to 1.2m.
  • Use a warm 2700K lamp on a dimmer, and never let the pendant be the only light.

Once you know the size and the drop, browse our bedroom pendant lights, all with soft shades and up to 60cm wide, or the wider bedroom lighting range for the lamps and wall lights that go with them.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best pendant lights for a bedroom?

Ones with a shade that hides the bulb, such as opal glass, frosted glass, fabric or a tight weave, because you look straight up at it from the pillow. Size it at length plus width in metres, times 8, in centimetres, and put it on a dimmer with a warm 2700K lamp.

Can you use a pendant light in a bedroom?

Yes, as long as it is not the only light. Keep it on a dimmer and pair it with lamps or wall lights beside the bed, so you are not reading in your own shadow.

How high should a pendant be over a bed?

High enough that nobody catches it changing the duvet or sitting up, and we would hang it over the middle or foot of the bed. The 2.1m clearance relaxes over the bed itself and returns over the walkway round it.

How high should bedside pendant lights hang?

With the base 60 to 80cm above the bedside table, about eye level sitting up, and 8 to 12cm off the wall. Under a 2.4m ceiling, with a table about 60cm high, that needs a drop of 1 to 1.2m.

What size pendant light for a small bedroom?

Add the room's length and width in metres and multiply by 8, in centimetres, so about 48cm for a 3 by 3 metre room. Take the larger if you are caught between two sizes, and check the minimum drop against your ceiling.

Are pendant lights better than flush lights in a bedroom?

Pendants have more presence where you have the height. Under a 2.4m ceiling you only have 300mm over a walkway, and below about 2.3m we would choose a flush or semi-flush fitting.
