The Best Kitchen Island Pendant Lights for a UK Home

The best kitchen island pendant lights are the ones sized to your island: two at 30 to 40cm over a 1.8 metre island, and three medium pendants or one bar of about 90cm to 1.2 metres over 2.4 metres. Hang the base 75 to 90cm above the worktop, check the minimum drop against your ceiling, choose a shade you can wipe clean, and put the lot on a dimmer.

A list of best pendants is only useful if the fittings suit your kitchen, so we have measured these against a common British one: a 90cm worktop under a 2.4 metre ceiling. That is where a pendant that looked perfect online turns out to hang too low, and it takes a minute to check. Every fitting named here is one we sell, with its measurements taken from its listing and its price checked on the date shown, so you can check our working.

Which kitchen island pendant lights are best?

Choose by the length of the island first and the look second. These are the fittings we would start with at each size, and the sums are for the number of pendants the island wants.

Your island What we would hang Size and drop Cost, checked 5th November 2026
Under 1.5m One Diyas Riley Large Bell, antique brass with cognac glass 430mm, drop 700 to 1700mm £242.00
1.5 to 1.8m A pair of Elstead Provence in aged brass 370mm each, drop 280 to 2000mm £224.00 for two
1.8m, on a budget Three Endon Ridgeton in antique brass 200mm each, drop 530 to 1630mm £146.85 for three
2.4m Three Kichler Etcher Medium in champagne bronze 330mm each, drop 532 to 2355mm £416.40 for three
2.4m, one fitting Endon Ridgeton 4 Light Linear (900mm long) or Schuller Norma 4 Light Bar (980mm long) Drop 350 to 1780mm, or 500 to 2000mm £97.95 for the Ridgeton, £323.95 for the Norma

If you want the safe answer for an ordinary island, it is the pair. The Elstead Provence (£112.00, checked 5th November 2026) is a plain 370mm metal shade, simple enough that you will not tire of it, and its drop runs from 280mm to 2000mm, so it fits almost any ceiling. Metal shades also throw the light down and keep the lamp out of your eyes when you sit at the island, which is more than can be said for a good many prettier fittings.

The Endon Ridgeton pendant (£48.95, checked 5th November 2026) is the value pick: ribbed glass in an antique brass frame, 200mm across, at a price that leaves room for a proper dimmer. Three of them suit a 1.8 metre island, where we would hang three smaller pendants of 20 to 25cm. For a statement over a small island, the Diyas Riley Large Bell (£242.00, checked 5th November 2026) is 430mm of cognac glass. It sets a mood more than it lights a chopping board, so keep some task light elsewhere.

How many pendants, and how big?

Two suit most islands, three suit 2.4 metres and over, and one large piece suits a compact island. Our guide to how many pendant lights go over a kitchen island has the full working. The short form is here.

Island length Pendants Size each Spacing
Under 1.5m One large, or two small A statement piece Centred on the island
1.5 to 1.8m Two 30 to 40cm 60 to 75cm apart, centre to centre
1.8 to 2.4m Two large or three medium 30 to 40cm, or three smaller at 20 to 25cm 60 to 75cm apart
2.4m and over Three, or one linear fitting Three medium, or a bar of 90cm to 1.2m Keep the group in the middle two-thirds

Keep the whole group within the middle two-thirds of the island, and centre every pendant front to back. The commonest mistake is a pendant at each end like a pair of bookends, which leaves a dead zone in the middle exactly where you stand to chop. If you are caught between two sizes, take the larger. A slightly generous pendant looks deliberate, and a mean one looks like a compromise.

Pendants or a linear bar?

Separate pendants if you have the ceiling height and want the island to be the feature. A single bar if the ceiling is low, you want one clean line, or the wiring only runs to one point. A bar need not cost more, either: the Endon Ridgeton 4 Light Linear (£97.95, checked 5th November 2026) wraps fluted glass rods round four E14 lamps over 900mm, and costs less than three of the single Ridgeton pendants above.

We would be slower to buy on price alone at the top of the range, because what a good bar gives you is a defined spread of light. The Kichler Riven LED Linear (£371.22, checked 5th November 2026) is 1222mm long with clear fluted glass over an acrylic diffuser, and its listing gives 3,050 lumens with dimming. The Schuller Norma 4 Light Bar (£323.95, checked 5th November 2026) is 980mm of ribbed glass shades running from clear through smoked grey to amber, and its listing gives 3,480 lumens. Three pendants have more presence. One line of light is calmer and easier to wire.

How high should kitchen island pendants hang?

Hang the bottom of each pendant 75 to 90cm above the worktop. On a standard 90cm worktop, that puts the base 165 to 180cm off the floor, and under a 2.4 metre ceiling that gives you only 60 to 75cm from ceiling to base for the whole fitting. So read the minimum drop on the listing before you read anything else. Add about 7.5cm above the worktop for every extra 30cm of ceiling, so about 83 to 98cm at 2.7 metres.

Fitting Drop on its listing Under a 2.4m ceiling Under a 2.7m ceiling
Elstead Provence 280 to 2000mm Fits Fits
Endon Ridgeton 4 Light Linear 350 to 1780mm Fits Fits
Schuller Norma 4 Light Bar 500 to 2000mm Fits Fits
Diyas Riley Large Bell 700 to 1700mm Fits Fits
Kichler Aster 3 Light 789 to 1703mm Too long: 71cm above the worktop at its shortest Fits
Elstead Provence Rise and Fall 960 to 1800mm Too long: 54cm above the worktop at its shortest Fits

Those last two rows are the ones to learn from. The Provence Rise and Fall (£113.10, checked 5th November 2026) is a lovely thing, and its 960mm minimum drop would leave the base 54cm above a worktop under a 2.4 metre ceiling, where it would sit in your eyeline. Under 2.7 metres it is right. The plain Provence has no such problem, and it is the same 370mm width. Some listings give no maximum, or no drop at all, so ask us before you order one of those for a low room.

The test is simple. Sit at the island and look across it. If a pendant blocks the face of the person opposite, raise it. If it lights the ceiling more than the food, lower it. The fittings here are starting points, and the listing, your ceiling and the height of your family come first.

Which shade and finish work best over an island?

  • Glass you can wipe. An island pendant lives over cooking, so it will collect grease and steam. Smooth glass and metal wipe clean. Open ribs and rods take longer, which is the trade-off for the sparkle on the Ridgeton.
  • Opal or etched glass for soft light with no lamp on show. The Endon Evora Medium (£55.95, checked 5th November 2026) is opal ribbed glass, 220mm across with a 500 to 1600mm drop, and the Kichler Etcher uses white etched glass.
  • Clear glass if you will choose the bulb with care, because you will see it. The Endon Ashcroft (£45.75, checked 5th November 2026) is a plain clear dome, 200mm across. A clear shade at eye level, with a bright lamp in it, is the one to think twice about.
  • Metal for the least glare. A solid shade sends the light down onto the worktop and hides the lamp from anyone sitting at the island.
  • Leave fabric out. We like it in a bedroom, but in a kitchen it holds grease and smells, and it cannot be wiped.

If the hob is on the island, do not hang a pendant over it. Heat, steam and grease are hard on any fitting, and the extractor and hob makers set their own clearances, so hang the pendants over the prep or seating end and light the hob from the extractor.

For finish, match the metal to the taps and handles if you can, or mix one warm metal with one dark on purpose. Our guide to how to mix metals in a room goes through it. If the choice is between a clever shade and the right size, take the right size.

Which bulb, and how bright?

Start at 3000K if the island is a worktop, or 2700K if it is mostly where people sit and eat. Our guide to warm white and cool white explains why. For brightness, read the lumens on the box instead of the watts. Our 12W 3000K E27 GLS LED (£14.95, checked 5th November 2026) gives 1,521 lumens, so three of them give about 4,560 before you touch a dimmer, more than either of the bars above.

That is plenty, and we would not chase a figure beyond it. Island pendants light the worktop and the faces round it. They should not be the only light in the kitchen, so keep downlights or under-cabinet strips for the rest of the room, as in our guide to lighting an open-plan kitchen diner.

Do they need a dimmer, and why do they flicker?

Yes, they need one. The same worktop does breakfast, homework and a bottle of wine at ten at night, and no single brightness serves all three. Fit island pendants without a dimmer and you have bought half a lighting scheme.

If new LED pendants flicker when dimmed, check three things in this order: that the lamps are marked dimmable, that the dimmer is LED-rated, usually trailing edge, and that your total load sits inside the dimmer's range. Our guide to dimming LED lights goes through each one. Read the dimming line on built-in LED fittings too, because they vary: the Riven is listed as dimmable, and not every LED pendant is.

Can you fit kitchen island pendants yourself?

We would use a qualified electrician, because a ceiling point in the right place over an island is often a new job. In England, a new circuit is notifiable under Part P, Wales has its own rules, and either way you want three pendants or a bar lined up with the island before anyone cuts into the ceiling. Tell the electrician the weight too. The Ridgeton 4 Light Linear is listed at 5.8kg, the Kichler Aster at 6.57kg and the Norma bar at 7.18kg, so ask for a fixing that suits the weight and the ceiling, as your electrician specifies.

Are island pendants going out of style?

No, and we would ignore anyone telling you otherwise. What moves is the look. Rows of tiny caged filament pendants have dated, and fewer, larger pieces and single linear fittings have taken their place, with warmer metals and ribbed glass doing the work polished chrome once did. A well-scaled pendant in a finish you like will outlast whichever one the internet prefers this year.

The short version

  • Two pendants of 30 to 40cm suit most islands. Three medium, or one bar of 90cm to 1.2m, suit 2.4m and over.
  • Space them 60 to 75cm apart, centre to centre, within the middle two-thirds of the island.
  • Hang the base 75 to 90cm above the worktop. Under a 2.4m ceiling that leaves 60 to 75cm from ceiling to base, so check the fitting's minimum drop.
  • Choose glass or metal you can wipe. Keep fabric out of the kitchen.
  • Use 2700K to 3000K lamps on an LED-rated dimmer.

Once you have the sizes, the choosing is the pleasure. Browse our kitchen island lights, which you can filter by size and finish, or our guide to the best pendant lights for a dining table if the same room has both.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best pendant lights for a kitchen island?

Ones sized to the island, hung 75 to 90cm above the worktop, with a shade you can wipe clean. Two pendants of 30 to 40cm suit a 1.8m island, and three medium pendants or one 90cm to 1.2m bar suit 2.4m and over. Check the minimum drop against your ceiling before you choose a look.

How many pendant lights should go over a kitchen island?

Two for most islands, three from about 2.4m, and one large piece under 1.5m. Space several 60 to 75cm apart, centre to centre, within the middle two-thirds of the island, and centre every pendant front to back.

How high should pendant lights be above a kitchen island?

The base should sit 75 to 90cm above the worktop, a little higher under tall ceilings: about 83 to 98cm at 2.7m. Under a 2.4m ceiling, with a 90cm worktop, that leaves only 60 to 75cm from ceiling to base, so check the fitting's minimum drop.

Is one linear light or three pendants better over an island?

Three pendants have more presence if you have the ceiling height. One linear bar is calmer, suits a low ceiling better and needs only one ceiling point. A bar of about 90cm to 1.2m suits a 2.4m island.

What colour temperature is best for kitchen island pendants?

3000K if you work at the island, and 2700K if it is mostly where people sit and eat. Keep them on a dimmer so the same lights work for chopping at six and supper at nine.

Why do my LED island pendants flicker when dimmed?

Usually the lamp is not dimmable, the dimmer is not LED-rated, or the total load is outside the dimmer's range. Check those in that order, and use a trailing-edge dimmer unless the fitting asks for something else.
